You may notice that this image is particularly close, even for a reversed 24mm, but I've opted to crop in to show the exoskeleton detail.

Milkweed Bug, probably Oncopeltus fasciatu.
Collected several weeks ago when the milkweed seedpods were getting ready to open. Shot at about 4x lifesized, Pentax K01 with reverse mounted SMC K 24mm f3.5 on extension. 130 exposures in 2 stacks, combined in Zerene Stacker.

This Photograph is focus stacked by image stacking software "Combine ZP". So the depth of focus is very deep.
Using focus bracketing feature of Olympus OM=D E-M5 mk 2,
27pictures were taken and stacked.

The eucalypts (several genera including Eucalyptus) have flowers with a bud cap that opens as the flower develops. The bud cap is barely visible behind this bud. It eventually falls off as all those stamens burst out to resemble those from another flower in lower right.

Some focus stacking again. Tamron 9 + Canon 25mm extension tube. Sorry about the cobweb.. but he was got from the inside edge of the bathroom window where he had obviously met his end :-( But stunning eyes up close. Makes me think of a world map!

Found a side excursion to explore on this popular hike, and by hitting the trail with the sunrise and venturing away from the more popular viewpoints, I was able to enjoy this scene in solitude.
Romneya coulteri. I have grown this southern California native plant for years. Last year I finally noticed some unusual seed pods. Nearly all the pods, even when left on the plant for months, stay closed like the one at left. But just a few opened on the plant, still pointing up as if waiting for very strong winds to spill the seeds. Which led me to wonder about reproduction from seed by this species. The following quote may indicate some reason for its limited distribution in the wild:
"Matilija poppy is tricky to get started because it doesn't like being transplanted or grown from seed."--www.bhg.com/gardening
I have read that suggested means of sprouting seeds involves burning pine needles on top of a mass of seeds and the instructions include the word "hope" after that. And for anyone not familiar with the species, the plants DO spread once established, even invasively, by sending up shoots from spreading roots. And I have seen these shoots breaking through asphalt. But starting them is another thing.

This rock, about a meter in length, is covered with lichen. I couldn't photograph the rock from a central position, so I shot it at an angle. It took 30 images focus-stacked to get this composite. I uploaded it at 50% size so you can easily examine details of this colony.
