In comparison with timber rattlers, which can reach 6 feet i length, pygmy rattlesnakes are tiny. This one was approximately 20 inches long. They are easy to miss since they spend their time curled up in ambush near on the ground (another common name is Ground Rattler), and though common in parts of the Southeastern U.S., very infrequently seen in Mississippi.

This species is endemic (limited) to several counties in southern California and has a California Rare Plant Rank: 1B.3. It is also called Calochortus weedii var. vestus. The species name "fimbriatus" is Latin for "fringed."

Male Calochroa flavomaculata (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from NE Laos, Huaphanne prov. Mt. Phu Pane (1200-1600m, ca. 20°12'N 103°59'E, 10-22.v.2011, collection specimens).

Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) with a german wasp (Vespula germanica). Both found in the garden (Boom, Belgium, 8th October 2023). Asian hornets are invasive and prey on bees, flies & wasps.
