'TIME FOR A DRINK.'

A very smart adult male Waxwing perched on a dead branch overlooking a waterlogged grassy field. He peered down at other members of the flock who were drinking from small pools of water. Eventually he too followed suit and slaked his thirst.

I loved watching the drinking behaviour of the Waxwing flock. Sudden downward swoops, then a fluttering of wings as individuals decided on an exact landing place. Once on the ground, the actual drinking was fast and furious, always punctuated by checking the surroundings. Each drinking session lasted no more than a second or two, then birds sprung up into the air and flew to the safety of nearby trees.

BEST VIEWED LARGE.

Monarch butterflies, for a variety of reasons, are struggling these days with their numbers frighteningly low. One of the issues is diminishing habitat. You can help at the local level by adding flowering plants to your yards and gardens that we know provide not only food to Monarchs, and other butterflies and pollinators, too, but are also places for their larvae to grow.

In North America, Butterfly Weed, which is an orange or yellow member of the milkweed family, is a native plant that does just that. It provides a larval home to Queen and Monarch butterflies as well as lots of sweet nectar for other butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators.

You'll get to see all these beautiful winged little ones who are essential to our lives and you'll be supporting them, as well! :)

Did a morning walk to see what I could find. The bees were buzzing and the butterflies fluttering. A beautiful weekend in Michigan.

It seems butterflies are getting rare around here. It was good to capture this one.

Hope everyone is well and safe.

The second day of training wasn't an improvement. I actually found today worse than yesterday. It was a revolving door of teachers as the school had messed up the scheduling and just as things were starting resemble some sort of sense, the teacher would switch again.

By the end of the day, I was exhausted and feeling discouraged. It's not easy to hear that everything you say is wrong and still keep your spirits up.

Needless to say, by the time quitting time rolled around, I was more than ready to leave!

Oh well, hope everyone has had a good day.

This is one of those crazy butterflies that flutters ALL the time! The entire time we were at the butterfly center I never saw this butterfly land on a flower and sit still to sip the nectar. It actually sipped while fluttering!

You wouldn't believe the number of shots taken just trying to get a clear view of those wings. This was the best I managed. Not 100% sure, but am guessing this is a female Great Mormon butterfly.

Seen at the Cecil B Day Butterfly Center, at Callaway Gardens. The center used to provide visual lists of the butterflies on display, but that was years ago. Fortunately, I took photos of them to try and ID the butterflies once I got home.

My husband and I went for a hike yesterday. We came across a small roost of Monarch butterflies!!! It was amazing to watch them as it was fairly windy and yet they navigated the wind and rode the currents beautifully. On our way back to our house there were a lot of them feasting on the wild flowers that grow along the road!

The final photos from my trip. I will then be only 3 months behind BUT my last trip had enough photos to last many months!

I saw several of these at this location but this was my first photo at the small pond. I love the species and the photo so make no apologies for uploading another photo of one. A final reminder of the trip.
