It was over 100 degrees today. When this Pipevine parked in the shade who was I to complain? I took about twenty shots and settled on this one. No flash. The color is generated by thin film interference. Yesterdays I posted a lateral (ventral) view of the Pipevine.
I rarely see this swallowtail perched with wings open. Perhaps it was just too hot to keep up the fluttering motion.
Oops, I am flying rapidly into autumn at Golden Ponds although this is not much of a color season after a record hot and a dry August and September here in Kochistan. It seems the color at Golden Ponds is fading directly to brown so this will not be a stellar fall season.
This is an exploding shot of my favorite tree along St.Vrain River west of the Golden Ponds dam... moving as fast as I could manage. Boy, am I bushed! I aimed up toward the tree and sky and cranked the 70-200mm the-zoom as fast as I could during the exposure. There was enough information to figure out the shot's location. This is a recent zoom experiment at Longmont's Golden Ponds along the river in this fall. I edited this to change my recent direction from streams to autumn. Clearly, there was no camera back spin at all during the zoom but the foliage was expanding fast, and wiggly, in this case. The 200mm focal length is just a report at one end of the zoomed exposure.
I started to crank the zoom just as I started the exposure and lucked out. I have no idea how I got the wiggles into the exposure. I made these shots without the monster 72mm variable neutral density filter I don't much like. I shot this in normal daylight. Here is the lucky shot that happened on the shoot. This picture was a new twist; using the camera as slowly as I could hold the monopod. I am just experimenting but I am getting better at hand held motion at shorter exposures. This exposure is one of the tricks used. Here I set the the camera for a single exposure on the sensor unlike other attempts. I continued to experiment with that. I think now I am a bit quicker. Dusk helps. I already posted previous shots that were extremely lucky. I used Lightroom and then dropped it into Photoshop to see what what might appear through the fog.
I have yet to give up all of my attempts at these trick shot without a neutral density filter to slow the world down. This is pretty good at 1/13th second. This shows how tough it is while over exposure kept knocking me over the exposure edge.
Taken near the beautiful lotus pond in the Sanctuary, Palm Cove, Queensland, Australia. Took me a while to snap these two!
A female Brimstone butterfly launches itself from a perennial sweet pea flower at Magdalen Hill Down. The Brimstones seemed to absolutely love this plant. Will definitely be planting some for next year.

Please read my story. May it bring a moment of joy to you this day.
(I love the God I worship, the Maker of man and beast. He sent me a little gift today, for my wedding anniversary. And for something else. He knew I needed a touch of gentleness.)
Here is the story...
Birds repeatedly fly down our chimney. They flutter about, panic-stricken, inside the fireplace. The noise attracts our attention, and then we begin the process of setting them free.
First, we open the back door so they can feel an air draft, and (hopefully) they will fly towards it.
Second, we open the fireplace glass doors, and then the cinder screen. And we wait.
Usually the birds zip by our heads and fly about madly in the family room, from window to shuttered window, seeking escape. But not this little one.
I couldn’t even see him/her at first, its little body was so dark. But when I did see him, he just sat there. I wondered if he was hurt, so I reached in to pick him up. He hopped around to evade my hand, but he didn’t fly off in terror.
He finally made his bid for freedom and began the same routine as his former captive friends, flitting from window to window. I kept going after him. I would just about have him and zip… off he’d go. I didn’t want him to get hurt, so I asked God to let me catch him. In the next few seconds, I simply closed my hand over his tiny body.
His little heart was beating; I didn’t want him to have a heart attack, so I continued to talk to him, softly. I stroked his head lightly, while his tiny, bright eyes studied me. He wasn’t struggling, and he was so sweet and warm to hold, that I prolonged the moment of his release.
I liked the look of my finger touching his downy head. Then, I remembered that my Rebel was nearby and fitted with my wide angle. So, I told my little bird friend that he was going to help me with a shot. He seemed to be okay with that; no struggling.
So, I jammed the camera using a battery charger as a lift, set a few simple settings, turned on my self timer, and proceeded to shoot. Just for a minute or two. I still worried about the little guy having a heart attack; I know that can happen to small birds.
Soon his portrait sitting, well captured-in-a-hand sitting, was over. I walked him outside and lifted him to one of the bird feeders. My heart nearly melted when I opened my hand and he wouldn’t leave. He clung to my finger with his spindly little feet.
I unseated him onto the feeder and told him that he was free. It was then that I noticed why he was so dark -- my hand and his feathers were covered in black soot.
He stood for a moment, as though afraid to fly (that troubled me), but then with a quick cock to his head, he flew off into the distance, as fine as you could please.
Thank you, Father. Thank you for your gift of tiny sparrows… and miraculous moments that touch the heart, and heal the soul. Thank you. Amen.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. The Bible, Matthew 10:29-31

It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world.

The girl in the shot didn't seem to like the doves. She shooed them away as I made ready for the shot. Looks almost like she is directing a ballet of birds.
My apologies for having been somewhat MIA lately. I have been a bit under the weather both literally and figuratively. Have been fighting a migraine headache off and on for about a week . It seems to have something to do with the fluctuation in temperature and humidity .
Anyway I finally felt like picking up a camera today and this little fellow was there to greet me. The lighting was a bit subdued but I did get at least a bit of feather definition and a tiny catch-light in his eye. And I sort of liked his choice of a perch.
Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend !
