A wall, video tape and a fan are the elements that make up Flaming Tape (2021) Zivinas Kempinas has taken the flat strips of film from the reel to create a sculpture. In is own words: “I am attracted to things that can transcend their own banality and materiality to become something else – something more. I love the way videotape is delicate and durable at the same time – because it’s meant to last – yet it’s disappearing from our lives anyway.”

Kempinas is fascinated by various types of energy : light, the rhythm of geometric a pattern , or a gust of wind. A fan that produces an air current sets the magnetic tape in motion, like a three dimensional drawing that suddenly starts to move. Althouh the video tape is uniformingly black in color, it creates visual effects against the white wall. Light and air currents are phenomena that activate Kempinas’ installations. To emphasize the temporality of the movement, his work balances on the edge of floating and hanging, falling and collapsing.

Zivinas Kempinas and Calder

Calder made three dimensional ‘drawings in space’ with wire – much as if the background of a drawing was cut away with only the lines remaining. The spatial drawings are also brought to life by air currents. In Kempinas’ Flaming Tape, numerous pieces of magnetic video tape have been attached to the wall, rigidly parallel to each other, to form a striped image. Some of the pieces of tape in the middle of the work are not completely stuck to the wall, fluttering in the space whenever the fan is switched on. As soon as it is switched off, these pieces of tape return to their original position in the pattern.Energetic activation, compositional variations of an artwork in the moment of movement, and the concept of a spatial drawing all connect Kempinas to Calder.

I was down in Philly visiting my girlfriend's sister, helping out with house renovations. We went out and tried to grab a few shots of the city, but I did not get any that I felt turned out very well. Then, on the day that we are going to leave we saw this butterfly enjoying some local flowers. My girlfriend yells at me to grab my camera and come over and take a look. Sure enough, there is this friendly little guy (and eventually a second one) out sucking up some nectar in the garden. Oddly enough, the only good shots I got from the trip were in this garden, and had nothing to do with Philly itself. That, and it was super hot and muggy out, so the photos were a great way to relax from working on the house. Also, not sure what he is doing with his leg here... but whatever, he looks happy haha.

As usual, any and all criticisms are welcome. I hope you enjoy! :)

On the wings of change...

... we hold loosely, at times.

... we feel deeply, most often.

... we move freely, rarely.

... we pause for the seasons, yet briefly.

... we evolve, always.

Enjoy these moments, for they are the flutter-filled fodder of our memories.

My sad emotions released through an opening in my arm. They have been fluttering inside me for days.

Lately I have been feeling sad. I have had those moments where you think you love someone and you ask them if they love you back. They tell you that they don't love you back. It's been that way my whole life up to now. Every guy has lied to my face or I had one tell me the truth over the phone. It's heartbreaking and it makes me feel like no guy will ever love me. I haven't given up hope yet. But for now until I find someone worthwhile, I'm giving myself a break from trying to find love.

...you make my heart

Love is like gambling… literally. You never know how it’s going turn out. Whether you’ll end up winning, losing, or breaking even. But think of it this way: if you bet big, you win big. But there’s also a chance that you might end up losing big and that’s exactly how love is. The more you love a person, the bigger the reward but it’s also a bigger heartbreak. The more time you invest in a mate, the more difficult it is to leave. But if you bet little, the rewards are also little. You can’t expect a person to lay it all on the line when you’ve only known them for a month.

The reason love is a gamble is because you never know the result until you stop playing. When you are gambling (whether it’s blackjack, poker, slots) you never know if you lost money until you decide to stop playing. It’s the same way with love. You never know if it’s going to be a huge heartbreak, mutual break up with no tears, or even marriage until it’s the end.

When you are in love, you should know how lucky you are. It’s the greatest feeling in the world when you are in love with someone who loves you back. It’s one of the greatest highs a human being can feel.

When you lose someone you love, it’s one of the worst feelings in the world. It’s one of the lowest feelings a human being can feel. In this time, you need the right harmony of alone time mixed with time with friends.

In the end, I believe everything happens for a reason. If you are meant to marry the person you date, that’s great. If you break up with someone, you were meant to learn something from it. Breakups happens for so many reasons that you can’t ever put a finger on what went wrong. But no matter how bad it gets, keep a smile on your face and know that life is always meant to be great at the end. Like I said, you never know the result until you stop playing! - Mike Kim
