. . . While the leaves are turning and children are planning their Halloween costumes, dark snow clouds are planning their next attack on Michigan shores! The little, fluffy white clouds are dwarfed by the massive cold dark layer out over Lake Michigan.
Have a great weekend Facebook and Flickr friends!
Ptarmigan - this was such a fantastic day, well worth the accent into the snow. Tricky getting the exposures right with the full sun reflecting off the snow and the bird. I love the Cairngorms!

I call it the school holiday flower...starts to burst into flower as the holidays approach and then is fluffing seed for the return in September!
When I was a child I could see a rural red telephone box with a bank of rosebay willow herb above it.
I have NO idea what peacock chicks look like...but whatever...let's pretend these are it....crap clothes she wears by me..:P..I took advantage that the white laudry has been done in my house AND used all the stuff I could as background :P :P
just an angle showing how wings are positioned
These 2 are apparently too weak to migrate North at this time. The adult should be heading North to breed but is "acting wonky" , the other is very thin.
Although in this shot they appear to be a similar height in the water , the TUSW is holding its wings somewhat "fluffed"

in our area TRUS are typically the "Default" Swan... looking to discover TUSW is the "challenge -- game"
In this case although the adult TUSW did not have signature yellow in the lores, it was the easier ID
..i know this photo makes ID look somewhat easy...more to come on that ... subsequent postings
With out using the dreaded H word, fairly safe to lump to TRUS since it is meeting criteria of general structure as well as other head features
The immature bird is larger than the adult TUSW , but a runt by TRUS standards.
There are lingering questions however, which bring up the "Hybrid" word
Habits observations did not have the immature individual integrated into the TRUS flock even when it easily could have I.E. when TRUS flock was also feeding near reservoir
but it kept to itself, often opposite side of the the reservoir
Perhaps in its run down state was just avoiding possible "bullying " interaction.
It has been at times with the TUSW .
Perhaps it approached...and was not a threat due to its (slightly ) smaller size.
The TUSW is also "off" and seems to be trying to recuperate from a weakened state.
The flock of 30-50 TRUS that had been present wintering ,are now gone on Northbound migration.

I wasn't happy at all when I visited the field where this photo was taken, and several others. The field has been mowed down! Boohoo!!
~ Little fluff ball
This picture is from April. Now the little Berlin City foxes are a bit older and not so black anymore!
Not the best light for a picture, but such a great experience I would like to share with you, hope you like it!

While out 'shooting' fall colors in the pasture, one young mule...Sundance would not leave me alone. She walked through milkweed pods and they burst open spreading 'fluff'!!!

"Fluff Ball"
Dandelion Seedball, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
As a practical example of the technique I blogged about yesterday ( ankhphotography.net/…/…/black-backgrounds-in-daylight ) I took this shot, handheld, in my garden yesterday evening.
I have been trying to get a photo of a perfectly intact dandelion seedhead for a while now, so when I saw this one in the garden I dropped what I was doing and grabbed the camera.
