Okay now I realize something is wrong as I can't pick up any speed climbing out and finally check my flaps. Derp. This plane is so simple to fly I don't really bother with check lists
Early in the day the sun barely clears the mountains - and so do we to ensure that we can keep them in sight and not get disoriented in cloud since neither of our planes have artificial horizon instruments
Or not. Climb! Climb! Unfortunately the stock Savage Cub that Andrew was flying didn't have the performance to get over this ridge and he crashed into it
Continuing onward as Andrew works to catch up. I'm over the Bitterroot Range now and dropping back down towards the valley into Montana
Not too shabby, ended up only a few nm south of where I wanted to come down out of the mountain range, with the river to my left and reservoir to my right I was able to locate my position on the charts
Still following the highway, but sticking to the western side of the valley to avoid the precip and stay clear of potential icing conditions
Passing the town of Stevensville. Poor Andrew continues to have issues - his pitot tube froze and so he didn't realize he was close to overspeeding and a wind gust caused his aircraft to sustain critical structural damage
Airport control tower visible as I realize I've flown too close and encroached the Delta airspace without permission. Oh well
Over the Nine Pipe National Wildlife Refuge. Well, not directly over, as that would be poor airmanship to fly so low over a NWR
Had to circle around two times to let Andrew catch up after I passed him and forgot to throttle back
Came back around from the other end but you couldn't approach low enough and still see the runway, ended up way off to the left - that's the end of it just out my right window
Managed to get my wing back down without crashing. First try yey. Now watching Andrew approach from the opposite end
Andrew made it on his second attempt. We are now back up in the air circling to get up over the mountains
Mentioned how moody the clouds look off in the distance but Andrew said he didn't have any so I said go set your weather preset to Scattered (live weather was being wonky). This kicked him out of the flight session. D'oh!
