One of the earlier landmarks to the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Tunku Abd Rahman Flats or better known as Pekeliling Flats is to be demolished to make way for future developments.

I call this my Flat “Oak” Box. On the top of the box is a variation of a “Rolling Star” quilt pattern. The flat box is about 9 1/4" x 6 1/4” and 2 7/8" high on the outside. Inside it is 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1 3/8". I made it using 238 pieces of wood cut in either diamond or triangle shapes from different kinds of wood. The box is finished in its natural color with 5 or 6 coats of a clear wiping varnish, rubbed in by hand. The pieces are a bit over 3/16" thick, glued onto a Baltic Birch base, so hold up much better than a thin veneer.

The type of wood is listed on the bottom of the box from the center out. On this box the wood is “Walnut” and “Oak” from Missouri and “Brazilwood” from Brazil.

On the bottom I signed it, listed the wood, and dated it. After the date, the words “Foot Cut” let you know I made it on a foot powered table saw.

I lined the box with black velveteen.

I haven't photographed for a while, but this morning was too clear and bright not to. Sorry for the glare - lack of practice and being in a hurry.

The Derby Stakes, also known as the Epsom Derby or the Derby, and currently as the Cazoo Derby for sponsorship reasons, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres).[1] It was first run in 1780.

It is Britain's richest flat horse race, and the most prestigious of the five Classics. It is sometimes referred to as the "Blue Riband" of the turf. The race serves as the middle leg of the historically significant Triple Crown of British horse racing, preceded by the 2000 Guineas and followed by the St Leger, although the feat of winning all three is rarely attempted in the modern era due to changing priorities in racing and breeding, and the demands it places on horses.

The name "Derby" (deriving from the sponsorship of the Earl of Derby) has been borrowed many times, notably by the Kentucky Derby in the United States. The name "Epsom Derby" is often used in the United States, in order to differentiate The Derby from races such as the Kentucky Derby or Florida Derby.[2] The Derby run at Epsom is usually referred to as "the Derby" in Great Britain. It is one of Britain's great national sporting events[3] and has a large worldwide TV audience. wikipedia

Built in late 60s or early 70s and designed by the City Architect to replace slums in the area. Many of the city flats are orientated north/south to maximise sunlight and keep shadows to a minimum. They are made with reinforced concrete and have granite rubble cast into the concrete to minimise staining from rain.

Captains Flat is an historic mining town south of Queanbeyan in the Southern Tablelands of rural New South Wales with the Molonglo River running through it.

"The area was originally inhabited by Ngarigo Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. The town formed as a result of mining for gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper and iron pyrites in the hills surrounding the upper reaches of the Molonglo River. The town boomed from 1881 to 1899 then went into a rapid decline until 1939 when rail access revived mining activity for another 23 years." [Text courtesy of: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captains_Flat]. The reason they are linked to my pinch river profile is because they will inevitably feed into my work at some stage in some way or another, but for now can just be enjoyed as images of the area that captured my attention and inspired my creativity.
