Where has Flat Stanley been around the world?

The Flat Tires at The Garage in St. Petersburg, Florida. 5/23/09.

This must be my 16th Lowlands. Still the most versatile and complete summer festival in Holland. With shitloads of music,dj's, theatre, ballet, political debates and a excellent night program.

I did the night reports voor 3voor12. Read them (in Dutch) here:

een rijtje:

friday: 3voor12.vpro.nl/nieuws/2015/Lowlands/vrijdag/Lowlands--de...

saturday: 3voor12.vpro.nl/nieuws/2015/Lowlands/zaterdag/Lowlands--d...

sunday:http://3voor12.vpro.nl/nieuws/2015/Lowlands/zondag/nacht.html

Yuck, wonderful piece of czechnology.

Flat Stanley thought it would be great fun to make bookmarks for everyone. He used a Terry Medaris rubber stamp to stamp the images and then cut them out.

A few weeks ago Christine and I took a day trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats to take some photos.

We took quite a few, so I've decided to upload these in two parts. Here is Part 1, later this week I will upload part 2.

at the Skanstull metro station in Stockholm. I guess it's supposed to be arty.

I continue to work on posting Flickr album summaries of some of my earlier salt pond sessions. This album contains images from September 24, 2011. The day began with a hike out to the Weep, a small section of a drainage ditch that microbiologist Wayne Lanier and I had been studying. After taking a few photographs there I took a slow walk along the railroad line back to the Alviso Flat. Along the way, I took small side trips to the west along the levees that separated Salt Ponds A13 from A15 and A12 from A13.

This was a lovely day for photographs. Low stratus clouds allowed decent light for much of the walk. The wind was vigorous and kept the Sutton 16 near the high end of its wind range. This album picks up the walk near Alviso Flat. By this time the sun was getting low in the sky and sunlight came and went with the clouds. From the north end of Alviso Flat, the camera captured views of A16, New Chicago Marsh, Alviso Flat, Salt Pond A12, and Salt Pond A13 as well as Alviso. The session also produced photograph sequences that allowed the construction of several stitched panoramas. It was an altogether pleasant outing.

“Yesterday the foundation stone of the new Bible Christian Chapel, Maclaren Flat, was laid, and a more lovely day could not have been chosen; and what with the green grass, the springing flowers, and the budding wattles, everything had put on the appearance of spring. At the appointed time (3 o'clock) a large number of persons were gathered together, and the stone was laid by the Ladies of the Trustees — Mesdames Harris, Elliot, Thomas, Hardy, and Williams. . . there was a tea meeting, at which there were so many visitors that the tables were filled four times. . . The building is to be 23 feet by 21 feet, of stone, with brick quoins.” [Weekly Chronicle 25 Aug 1866]

“The new Bible Christian Chapel, Maclaren Flat, was opened for Divine service on Sunday (23rd). Sermons were preached in the morning and evening by the Rev. Mr. Way. of Port Elliot, and in the afternoon by the Rev. H T. Burgess, of Willunga. At each of the services the building was well filled, friends from a distance being hospitably entertained between the services by neighbouring residents. . . The chapel is a very neat building, comfortably fitted up internally.” [Adelaide Observer 29 Dec 1866]

“Bible Christian Chapel, Maclaren Flat . . . the new Bible Christian Chapel . . . is twice as large as the old one.” [Adelaide Observer 29 Dec 1866]

“The anniversary of the McLaren Flat chapel was held in Christmas day and the 26th. The Sunday services were conducted by the Rev. J. D. Langsford .(Wesleyan), and the Rev. J. Dingle, pastor of the circuit. On the Monday, at 11 a.m., there was a united Sunday School service, conducted by the superintendents and the pastor. . . The church roll shows an increase of 39 members and 27 on trial. . . A resolution was passed in favor of the union of the minor Methodist churches.” [Christian Colonist 6 Jan 1888]

The Magor Car Corporation built 6 axle flat cars like this for the U. S. Army, the majority were made between 1952 and 1953. They are 54' long, weighs 71,000 lbs. (35.6 tons), has a load-carrying capacity of 100 tons. It has a steel frame with side-pockets for stakes, and a wooden deck. The car has twelve-wheel, six axel, Buckeye-type trucks. While they had been made just for the Department of the Army (USAX) many were later re-lettered for the Department of Defense (DODX) and painted a darker helo drab opposed to the army’s olive drab. Today many are still in service with the DODX as well as on Amtrak MOW trains painted bright orange and some gray, and on shortlines like the Eastern Shore Railroad. This car never changed hands to DODX and has been at Fort Esutis serving with the army all of its life.
