What was once a dull, standard public toilet block is now a vibrant functioning artwork which saw 2000 visitors in its opening week.

‘The Cistern Chapel’, a fitting pun, boasts an intricately painted 5.5m high roof, decorated walls and windows, golden toilets, fresh flowers and chandeliers. A community led project, it was Nancy Bates who first had the idea of making Maryborough’s toilets the fanciest in the country.

“Our little city is thriving and developing a big reputation as a quirky tourist city but here we had these dowdy toilets on the side of our picturesque City Hall, right in the heart of our heritage city,” she told Escape.

“A couple of years ago I used the toilets in town and thought, this is not good enough,” she said. She sent photos of the drabby toilets to Councillor Daniel Sanderson, who agreed a few weeks later to add a coat of paint to freshen them up. “But by that time I had been thinking we could create the finest heritage-style toilets in Australia, with music, paintings and fresh flowers,” said Bates.

Though the toilets have not always been so lavishly decorated, they have long been a part of Maryborough's public infrastructure. One-hundred and twenty years ago, they were an outdoor women’s toilet serviced by the night-cart. Moved inside with advancements of sewerage systems, the toilets as they now stand are part of a heritage listed building. This factor lengthened the project’s course, and the community had to be innovative with how they refurbished the toilets. “However, the character of the precinct allowed us to have a little fun,” said Bates.

Professional artists Akos Juhasz and Gary Madded were contracted to paint the toilets, but they were by no means in it alone.

It was the community that made it happen, says Bates. “When an idea takes hold with the people in this city it is a classic case of watching big things from little things grow.” Local businesses and individuals came together, donating cash, in-kind contributions and artistic talent.

“The Cistern Chapel has come at the right time,” says Bates. “Covid-19 and the floods made it a bit of a tough struggle for many businesses – we are hoping the tourist spend will help get them through that dip.”

Reworking the Galaxy Explorer cockpit to fit four Friends minidolls. They need a longer space to sit, so it needed quite a bit of reworking, with adjustments to the internal Technic frame. I needed to dismantle quite a lot to make the needed changes. The frame is probably not quite as strong as before, but it still feels very solid. The original is a little over engineered.

The 12th running of the Fields of Athenry 10km took place on St. Stephen's Day, December 26th 2013 at 11:00 in Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland. Due to the very icy and frosty conditions for health and safety considerations the race start was delayed by a half an hour and started at the slightly later time of 11:30. The winter sun began to rise high into the sky and the earlier icy roads thawed sufficiently to allow for road racing and avoid a potential abandonment of the event. This worked out perfectly and the conditions were perfect for road racing. This follows on from the near apocalyptic rain conditions for the race last year.

This is one of the leading 10KM road races in Ireland. It is hard to believe that the race is "only" twelve years old. It's superb organisation, atmosphere, and great race history gives it the characteristic of a race that is many years older. The credit for this goes to the wonderful athletics club in Athenry AC and the Race Director for 2013 Frank Burke and his team of volunteers. The attention to every detail in the race which this year attracted over 1,200 participants means that the race has earned it's stripes as one of the leading road races in Ireland. This year the race coupled with Athenry Tidy Towns Committee. A contribution from the proceeds from this year's race will be made to support the work of the Tidy Town Committee.

The race started at the Railway station and then took in a loop of the famous fields of Athenry where it turns left and begins it's return to the town, passing the soccer club, over the railway lines, and finishing under the medival arch in Athenry town for a fittingly atmospheric finish to the race. Race HQ is in the Presentation College in Athenry. Post race showers, prize giving ceremony, and refreshments were provided in the College after the race.

This is a photograph from the 29th annual Bohermeen AC Patrick Bell 5KM Road Race, Jog, Walk, and Fun Run which was held at Bohermeen AC, Ardbracan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Saturday 7th June 2013 at 19:30. The race was held in very warm sunshine with little or no breeze: an almost perfect summer evening. The race commemorates Patrick Bell, the late Bohermeen clubman who died tragically in the summer of 1985 following a traffic accident, whilst returning home from Cork having competed in the National track championships. The wonderful atmosphere, the great racing and participation, the work by the club, Meath Athletics, the local community, and the wonderful weather is, yet again, a fitting tribute to Patrick's memory and his contribution to Athletics in Ireland. Congratulations to everyone involved. Everything that is good about grassroots athletics and running in Ireland was on show in Bohermeen tonight. The planned race route had to be changed at the last moment due to a funeral which was taking place in the area. This seen the race reverting back to it's old course which brought runners into Bohermeen village and through the bogs area of Ardbracan. The folks at Bohermeen AC and the local community host a barbeque, cook-out, and entertainment, as turf fires burn late into the night. One of the best after race atmospheres you are likely to find in Ireland. The race started at the school about 800m from the Bohermeen AC track and makes a left handed course around some beautiful rural country roads and turns back to Bohermeen Village and then back for the final kilometer which is straight to the track and the finish on about 60 meters of athletics track.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there.
