Visiting this park for the first time in October 2013 it was surprising to see many tents pitched in the park, these belonged to a rally of the so called People's Army against Thaksin Regime. General Preecha Iamsuphan, a core member of the People's Army, rang a bell to start Sunday's political rally in Lumphini Park. National police chief Adul Saengsingkaew said there were about 4,000 demonstrators in the park . This community had shops, stalls, hairdressers, in fact a small village commune had been set up near to the park entrance. It was ridiculous to see. I can never understand why the Thai government allowed it.
Lumphini Park is a 142 acre park in Bangkok, Thailand. The park offers rare open public space, trees and playgrounds in the Thai capital and contains an artificial lake where visitors can rent a variety of boats. The boats look tiring, they are pedal boats, I prefer boats with some form of power. The lake is massive and makes a picturesque spot for a picnic. Paths around the park totalling about 2.5 km in length are a popular area for evening joggers and cyclist. Officially, cycling is only permitted during the day between the times of 10 am to 3 pm. There is a smoking ban throughout the park, and dogs are prohibited. Many cyclist use this park to full advantage it seems. So watch out crossing the roads.
I found it peaceful, restful but boring. The gardens were not what I expected. It just needs some tender loving care and more plants. Lumphini Park was created in the 1920’s by King Rama VI on royal property. The park was named after Lumbini, the birthplace of the Lord Buddha in Nepal, Lumbini, is one of the fourteen zones of Nepal and is home to Lumbini site, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the historical Buddha and founder of the Buddhist philosophy.
A statue of king Rama V1 stands at the south western entrance to the park. at the time of its creation it stood on the outskirts of the city. Today it lies in the heart of the main business district and is in the Lumphini sub district, on the north side of Rama IV Road, between Ratchadamri Road and Witthayu Road. It has Bangkok's first public library and dance hall. During wintertime, the Palm Garden of Lumphini Park becomes the site for the annual Concert in the Park festival featuring classical music by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and other bands.
BTS Sky Train Silom Line Sala Daeng Station is here and the MRT ( Bangkok ) Lumphini Station and Si Lom Station are also nearby. It is the first public park of Bangkok, a heritage of King Rama VI given to his people. King Rama VI started to organize an exhibition of local products and natural resources in the winter of 1925. The construction included a huge central lake, with island, roads and buildings. Unfortunately, this exhibition was cancelled due to the untimely death of King Rama VI. Later, the project was revived in the reign of King Rama VII. The area of 14.40 hectares in the south of the park was rented to be an amusement park called Vanaruengrom, of which the rental fee was used for development of the rest area to be public park.
Giving this land to the government, King Rama VII stated that the land could be used as the public park only. However, during the World War II the park became the Japanese soldiers camp. After the war in 1952 - 1954, it was a venue for the celebration of the constitution and the Miss Siam. The Royal Monument of King Rama VI. This was built in 1942 to commemorate the King who kindly gave this park to his people. The King Rama VI Monument stands at the gate to the Lumphini Park, overlooking the busy Saladaeng junction. Corrado Feroci, an Italian sculptor completed the monument with the help of four Thai artists on 7 June 1941. It was a fitting tribute that Feroci designed this monument, as it was King Rama VI who requested the Italian government for an artist to help teach and promote art in Thailand. Feroci answered the call of duty in 1923. The monument is a statue of King Rama VI standing in his ceremonial uniform with a sword, on a high pedestal surrounded by fountains. An open tiled area where public ceremonies are held surrounds the monument.

This is a photograph from the 15th annual running of the Tom Brennan Memorial 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held on Furze Road, Phoenix Park, Chapelizod, Dublin City, Ireland on New Year's Day Wednesday 1st January 2020 at 12:00. This year's race had the biggest field participating in the history of the race. This is a fitting way to welcome the New Year and the start of a new decade.
The race route is a two loop course which starts and finishes on the Furze Road in the middle of the Phoenix Park. Participants follow a clockwise, right-handed, looped route around Furze Road, Ordnance Survey and Chesterfield Avenue. The weather on New Year's Day, over the past years, in the Phoenix Park has always been unpredictable and today was no different. The mild and calm weather of the Christmas period continued and there was near perfect conditions for running. A slight headwind into the faces of participants along Furze road (between 2KM and 3KM) was hardly noticeable in the mild conditions. However several hundred runners, joggers and walkers shook off the effects of Christmas celebrations to take part. The route itself is flat without any noticeable undulations.

The race is organised and promoted by the local athletics club Liffey Valley Athletic Club who are based in Islandbridge, Dublin 8 and have a catchment area around this part of Dublin city. The race itself commemorates the memory and contribution of former club member Tom Brennan who won the National Cross Country Championships in 1975 in UCD Belfield at the age of 24 years. A special commemorative perpetual trophy is presented to the winner of the race every year. The race is also of particular interest to those runners, joggers and walkers who are not necessarily involved in the competitive side of road racing. Annually the race is the first of a series of races in Dublin city which make up the Lord Mayor’s 5 Alive Challenge. This initiative by Dublin City Council is now in its eight year and several hundred runners, joggers and walkers volunteer to take part in five of Dublin’s most popular road races. Dublin City Council makes an open call for people to register to be a part of the programme in autumn every year.
The Liffey Valley Club and many other volunteers work hard to make this a very successful event. Undertaking a road race event in any location is a challenging task. However the Phoenix Park presents a unique challenge in terms of traffic flow around this part of Dublin and general logistics. Despite this the efforts by the host club are greatly appreciated as is evident by the turn out every year. It provides a splendid opening of the New Year for runners of all abilities. It is also a fitting 'official' start to the new calendar year of road racing in the Dublin and North Leinster region.
