Black Darter (Sympetrum danae) - freshly-emerged from yesterday.

After three weeks inside we decided to venture out again and take advantage of the good weather. I had a few locations in mind, starting with my favourite spot for Black Darters and Common Emeralds.

The latter were surprisingly few & far between but we didn't have to wait long to see the first immature S. Danae followed by several more. However the highlight was this still very fresh emergent crawling up the juncea.

The first I've seen and although I had a hunch it could only be S. danae I did ask a trusted source to confirm. What an absolute delight. One of those rare moments which are even more special in these restricted times.

Nubble Lighthouse

Constructed in 1879 & still in use today.

This is one of many shots of Nubble Light. I don't know about you, but I always take about 50 or more pics of basically the same comp when I am photographing a place like this. Maybe because the light & sky is ever-changing but I'm always trying to get the best possible shot. There is such a limited window with a sunrise I don't want to waste any of that precious time. Anyway, I was going through these pics today and realized this one got over-looked. It was taken at 4:53am on 8/28, a beautiful summer morning. We live relatively close to Nubble so it's only a 40 min drive but getting up at 3:30 is never easy, I'm sure glad we did that morning. It turned out to be one to remember.

This image was taken at Bombo south of Sydney. I led a group of 6 keen photographers from the Focus. group. We arrived and there was no cloud so I was determined to try and get a pleasing image in more challenging conditions - where you have to work for your images. I took this at the first light first hit these big rock columns. Image was processed in PS CC with some very new techniques I've been learning to try and better interpret the light.

Brendan is a amateur photographer based in Sydney Australia who loves exploring and shooting sea/andscapes/nightscapes in different areas sometimes with good mates other times by himself to improve his skills. The winter storms were hard on the hardiest of plants, the ones that call the sandy, salty beach home. Having seen the waves and high tides flatten the dunes where these plants grow, I wasn't expecting to see them again.

I underestimated them. Their roots must run much, much deeper than I thought they did. Now that it's May, the sand verbena and other beach plants are back, bigger and better than ever.

On my recent trip to Dead Horse Point in Utah, I got up before sunrise so I could hurry to the overlook.

It was an amazing sunrise, and I found this wonderful old pine tree ready to greet the first rays of the day.

No doubt it had seen many.many more than I had, and will probably outlast me too!

I will never tire of the desert southwest, and might even move there in the not too distant future.

The Montana winters just aren't fun anymore!
