I first took a photo of this Bedford TK fire engine (which was probably new to Cumbria Fire Brigade in either 1974 or 1975) in September 207 on my first visit to the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway (closed September 6 1965 by British Rail as a result of the Beeching cuts but re-opened as a heritage railway on May 2 1973) on my second visit to Haven Lodge. That first visit was on Tuesday 4 September and I remember being reluctant to pay £5.40 for the adult return fare. The carer who took us up there, Tim, mocked me for being so frugal with my money.
Anyway, I must have liked it because every time since (and that was seven visits) I'd been asking and asking to go on the L&H again to no avail. Well, twelve visits later, my wish was granted because, a couple of weeks ago, Karen Shand and Radek Schultz took us (me and two girls who aren't much to look at) there. Pity it was on a Thursday, though and near the end of the holiday.
Apologies for the stepladder and tape being in the way...maybe I should have taken the picture from the same angle as last time.

Activation of the fire alarm and the building was evacuated and fire Brigade called.
A lovely sunny day out with my group, with a iced over pond... well those that could make it...ending with having to leave the coffee shop...a fire alarm... all the drama. the girls took their drinks with them...I had to much 'stuff to grab' so in sunshine and cold, but hey! it was an experience.
They served the beach communities of Aptos, La Selva Beach and Rio Del Mar in Santa Cruz County, CA.
I spotted the old Galway Fire Engine in the Riverside Museum in Glasgow on our recent trip. From an age where men were hardy, fire engines were fire engines, a pump and not much else! The Museum is dedicated to Road Transport of all types - well worth a visit.
