Finally got back to the pond yesterday, and I can officially say that the dragonfly season is over. Hundreds of skipper butterflies, the only wildlife airborne. A few hoverflies on ash covered leaves which I'll post later this week, but it's back to the archives for the time being.

Many species in the genus Enallagma look similar to each other. The northern bluet looks similar to many bluet species. They include the boreal bluet, familiar bluet, Hagen's bluet, marsh bluet, and vernal bluet. It can be distinguished from familiar bluet by the large postocular spots and the shorter cerci. The characteristics shared by northern and boreal bluets are their large eyespots, and a mushroom-shaped black spot on abdominal segment S2. Its best seen dorsally.

Enallagma annexum, the Northern Bluet, is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae. The only fact that I know for certain is that Bluets must be part of the largest family. I was reading about the family yesterday, and the writer got so tired of writing "bluet" that he started with a capital "B" and by the time he (or she) got to the "Marsh Bluet," all capital "Bs" and Latin names had disappeared ;-)

It took until November for our area to burst with the normal colors of October, but here they are at long last.

We've had a strange winter so far. Warm temperatures, sometimes even above freezing! I'm happy that we're finally getting some snow.

Nice to see these around my feeder. This one perched in this spot and watched the other birds feeding, then finally joined the other birds on the ground looking for food.

Finally, a new bridge. The Montana Rockies Daylight cruses under what appears to be an over built replacement compared to the original. Still have a lot to do, including finish the approaches, but it will be open by the fall.

For quite some time I was searching for an opportunity to photograph the thumb-sized European treefrogs. Over the years I had heard them a lot of times, but never saw, let alone photograph one. So you can imagine how happy I was to find my first treefrog. Photographing is not easy, since they seem tone having the habit to rest in impenetrable blackberry-shrubs. But I succeeded!

Enjoy!

Finally getting the hang of manual focus in macro with insects. The lens nor camera has IBIS, the macro lens has a breath width of focus so it is truly an accomplishment for me to get this Skipper head on.

Easy family outing to the Spitzingsee.

A tour to Obere Firstalm and then a toboggan slide down.

I've been waiting and waiting for enough good snow to go cross-country skiing and, finally, it's arrived.

The sun rises later in the mountains, and in winter, it doesn't rise at all in some mountain valleys. I started taking photos at 6:00 a.m., and a good three hours later, at 9:05 a.m., the sun finally rose over the Stucklistock (3,313 m).

It's been mostly Dark Sky July along the Central Coast of CA. This morning the sun finally broke through the gray mist. A pod of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) were feeding and I was ready; Sony a9; Sony 200-600mm lens at 543 mm; 1/3200 sec; f/9; 1600 ISO; Gitzo tripod; Morro Bay National Estuary; CA; USA

Good riddance to the best and worst year of my whole damn life.

Happy new year folks. <3

Finally a little snow to shoot.

Finally caught up to a basket of poinsettias to finish off the holiday colors.

I have a back-log, I need to stop being so lazy. Editing images used to be so much more enjoyable

After weeks - at least in my mind - the sun came back and gave a a great light in the afternoon.

The Toni in the background is a university, the place in the foreground will receive a school house for first to sixth class, so the credit is approved in the voting next weekend.

The other day I noticed movement on the neighbour's driveway and thought bobcat ! But, no..... finally it's a coyote. I've been hoping to see one close enough to get a photo for ages....

We hear them and see them by themselves or in packs of up to 6 on the golf course; just trotting up and down the fence line from time to time.

I know they come out into our cul de sac every so often, but I've never been lucky enough to spot them.

This time I did, and ran for my camera....however, I was obviously too excited to get proper focus even with autofocus !! ...arrghhh..! however, the photos are good enough to document my beautiful coyote and I did get several.....

He/she stopped for this one when I opened the window and gently called to it ... it paused and looked at me for several seconds... then, made a little dive into the snow ... trying to look fierce ... and, perhaps hearing a vole beneath the snow.... but, then... just sauntered off across that yard and on to the next and so on down the block. I lost sight of it about 4 houses down ... and, of course have been wasting a lot of time looking out the windows ever since ..hoping for a second sighting.... so beautiful.

Finally got a nice shot of a Red Kite over the house!

Finally caught the ice cream truck!

Added to Once A Week for the topic "vocational world".

The man left the Ernst & Young office on a Saturday afternoon.

I've been waiting a long time for a really good opportunity to photograph this bird, a species that lives in my neighborhood but is one of the rarer visitors to the yard. Finally I got my shot when I came home from work today and--seeing a lot of activity--decided to spend some time yardbirding. This sapsucker came down to the fountain about three meters from me and spent several minutes bathing and looking right at me without any apparent concern. Aside from identifying a new species in the yard (I'm talkin to you, pileated woodpecker), nothing could have been better. Red-breasted sapsucker, backyard Olympia.

This F12 belongs to a University of Pittsburgh student and has been around Oakland since the late Fall but I've managed to miss seeing it on a daily basis despite living 5 minutes away from Pitt's campus. Luckily today my friend Jeff spotted it and sent me a text to let me know it was parked in a lot on campus. I grabbed my camera and jumped in the car and headed a few streets over as fast as I could. I'm so happy to have finally seen it, thanks again Jeff!!

Barred Owl with wild caught rodent. Cold outing today waiting for some owl huntin action. It paid off in the end.

I found this cute vintage egg basket on Etsy a while back, and I've been wanting to use it so bad! This is from a session a couple weeks ago - little Olivia, went from one prop to another - without even opening one eye!

Finally got to use the camera in 2016 ~ Ogwr

Good morning everyone. And as the title indicates, I finally got some pics of a Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta Canadensis). Been a long time coming since I first spotted one a little over a month ago.

The day this was taken three appeared, but only briefly together. Plus with the colder temps they are now visiting daily. But you need to be there at the right time with camera in-hand when they do. Plus very patient as they are hyper little birds and rarely ever sit still for long.

Just two pics of the same bird on different tree limbs, of which the second one can be found in the comment section and my stream. And while it's difficult to differentiate between gender, I'm pretty sure this is a male.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and weekend.

After about an hour or so of photographing this South Carolina gem, the clouds finally parted and the sun shone brightly on the face of Yellow Branch Falls. Before leaving I took multiple portrait exposures in hopes of capturing a nice shot of the falls including the pretty blue sky.

I went to a woodmill some two years ago and saw a broken mirror lying discarded on the ground. It was in a musty and damp section at the back of a decaying wooden structure choked with planks and pieces of timber. I asked some of the guys there to hold the mirror up to their faces and I took some portrait photos. I finally returned to the sawmill recently (and gave the guys copies of the photos from two years earlier) and I was intrigued to see that the mirror has risen from the ashes and been promoted to pride of place on the wall.
