After much debating (with myself) I finally came up with a setting square that I like. I think this one keeps with the feeling of the quilt top and brings some brightness.

Rain at CSAC, lots of it!

A quick stop to see if anything was running on the NS Chicago Line at Waterloo, Indiana, finally netted me one westbound intermodal. The signals had been green in both directions for quite some time. It was probably a quiet day otherwise on this Good Friday. Perhaps the dispatcher was clearing routes a little farther in advance.

I know that is not as good as it should be, but is the first time I 'kill' a helmet...

Finally back at it! A few things I've been working on...the floral garden globe was inspired by stiglice - Judit's garden sphere. I have always admired it! I hope she doesn't mind! ;-) The other is made with pebbles. It's good to be back at it again!

Believe it or not, Judah does prefer to sleep on her own bed. I haven't had one for her in a while, and Costco claimed that they didn't have the super cheap and HUGE dog beds except around the holidays so we were out of luck. The day I got the Mac from there they said we can put suggestions, comments, etc in the suggestion box so my mom wrote in big letters "We want BIG dog beds! Not just for Christmas or Hanukkah!"

Tonight I walked down the aisle toward the cat litter since we had a coupon and I told my mom, "I'm going to pray that as I walk down there, big dog beds will appear."

Um. God answers prayers.

Because FINALLY there were huge dog beds (cute ones!!) in the cardboard containers they're kept in for display. These were rectangular (36"x42", $17!!) in three different fabrics, all of which were very homey and summery. Woo! Called my sister and BIL, got them two, got Judah one, and the minute I brought it home she jumped on it. But seriously. A bed not even this size easily runs $50 or more, and usually not as nice as these! Plus the covers come off and you can wash them.

After my fits of jealousy over many of my contacts' fine photos of jewel beetles, I finally found one that stayed still for longer than a second. It was on the sand, so I assumed it had been caught in the wrong spot, but when I disturbed it it flew off in a very healthy looking way. The metallic green feet aren't in focus, but are still pretty dapper.

It's hard to believe that it's been 9 months since I worked on the competition of this project. It has stumbled on for way too long - the client couldn't decide what they wanted and we had to start completely over after finishing it entirely about 4 months ago. Not too much fun...

But finally it's good to go and this is one of the documents for the application for a construction permit that I just finished (I think I put in about 80 hours this last week with all the documents there are to prepare...)

This is yet another case where I wish I had had more time to finish this piece - the thing that *really* bothers me is the lack of shadows on the statues. But in architecture there's never enough time to get things perfect........

This was made entirely in 2D with AutoCAD and Photoshop, with the exception of the shadows on the curved roof which were calculated really quickly in Sketchup. This method is much faster (for me anyway) than to create a true 3D model (as seen in the linked project above), because I have so much more control over the textures and colors.

After months of running, I finally caught myself one of the Winona sand trains out on the mainline, in good light. It took so long, that the three burners up front didn't even make me complain, was just happy to get it checked off my list. Sand empties pull up to Tower CK, where they will shove back into the UP yard to break down the train.

After a busy and emotional day the two giants finally fall to sleep wondering what the morrow will bring.

For seven years, my wife and I and some friends have comprised a team of eight, the Sallee Rovers, against a dozen and a half other teams in an annual fund-raising Trivia Night for the local Victorian Order of Nurses. At the end of the night most years, we have been in the middle of the pack. For the first time, last night *our* team came first.

Here the top teams and the "booby prize" winning team are being announced. It was all a lot of fun. But I'm right proud of us. [ . . . He says, polishing fingernails on shirt-front.]

I have probably over-processed the screen somewhat in order to bring it up for better legibility. For post-pro geeks: I selected the screen, deepened the darks and mid-tones fairly substantially and increased local contrast a little. I didn't like the outline of the screen (it was too sharp and jagged due to the selection) so I drew the "softening brush" over the screen's perimeter to reduce that effect. Then I did an unsharp-mask procedure on the entire picture and I built the border. Finally, I decided the odd coloration of the mix of light was not as pleasant as a filtered b&w conversion which this is the result of. All of that was done in PSP X5, except the b&w conversion which was done in Picasa along with generating the less-than-one-meg .jpg for posting.

Excavation day!

The photos were provided by the contractor and some are from the neighbor on the property next to me. Thank you, guys!

This is the beginning of another chapter in my life.

This was a painstaking decision on my part after purchasing the property years ago which was, in the beginning, going to be a place where I would build a small cabin in the woods and would spend a lot of my time collecting my thoughts and being close to nature as I have always been as an outdoorsman and writer ….. and photography as well…..

We’ve lived in Wylie for decades. My Wife came to me one day and asked if I’d like to have what I’ve alway wanted all these years, actually decades………… that is to move to the country! (No hem-hawing around on my part)

So I started the process of getting utilities on the property first!!

When you’re dealing with Co-ops you have to be patient. Getting power on the property was no problem. I had an electrician run me an underground power line from the road to a temporary power pole next to my 12x24 shed, this way the power for the new home would be present.

Next was getting water onto the property…….. this was a challenge!!

The Co-op (water company) gave me an initial proposal to run a waterline onto the property which I thought was acceptable, considering where it was coming from…… I went to the office and paid for the cost to run it and that was that …….. until they determined that the main water line did not have the capacity for another home and they would have to run a new main to supply my new home….so I had them give me another proposal to do that…… I had already paid the $2100 as first stated. When I got the new proposal it went from $2100 to $10,500 to run a new line. (I had already checked to see how much it would cost to drill me a well on the property…… but $16,000 was not cutting it for me)

Before contacting the water department I found out that a new 4 inch waterline had been run to a location about 1/2 mile from me.

The facility manager side of me kicked in and so I contacted them and told them that I wasn’t paying that much money for them to run a new waterline. They put their engineer on the phone and I suggested that he consider replacing the existing 20 something year old 1 1/2 inch line with the new 4 inch line that was 1/2 mile from me. I told him that he would eventually have to replace the old line and the cost would probably be considerably higher by the time they got to it. I also told him that with the progress taking place in the surrounding roads, there was a potential for new homes to be built in the area and this would be a great opportunity to have it in place for future customers. (Just my future projection). But I told him was not paying $10,500 and I expect a refund of the money that I had already paid. So I put building the new home on hold until I could figure something out.

3 weeks later I got a call from the water department and they wanted me to know they had a meeting recently and had come to a conclusion that the existing waterline pressure was inadequate for the homes that are in the area and they would eventually have to replace it with a new waterline and they had a plan to replace the old 1 1/2 inch line with a new 4 inch and they could certainly run a new waterline to my property…….. and it would only cost me $2100, which I had already paid.

I said to him, “Wow! Now that’s a great idea. That’s some great thinking on someone’s part and what a savings they’ll reap by doing it now! When can I expect to have water on the property?”

I was told they would have a crew to begin running it within 3 weeks and I should have water within the next two months.

I guess someone took my advice and ran with it and took the credit!

But I have had setback after setback over the last two years with two shoulder surgeries and now this knee surgery….. and the negotiations with the contractor. Once we came to an agreement he began the process of getting the new home built. And so this it in progress……

Wicked FINALLY came to Dayton. It's about time. I love this story so much, and was great to see it on stage. Would love to see it in a big city though. I bet the production is even MORE spectacular.
