Fernsehturm Berlin - the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the former German Democratic Republic (GDR)
This was the symbol of Soviet achievement in former East Berlin. Interestingly enough, when they got around to building it, most of the talent engineers and architects had already fled East Germany for the West. The story that I am told is that they had to smuggle in Swedes to design and build the tower and then smuggle them out to save face. I'm guessing it came packed in a box that said IKEA ;)

The Fernsehturm (television tower) is a must-see for every Berlin-lover, as it allows for the best views over the entire city, especially on clear days.
The Berlin Television Tower or Fernsehturm Berlin as it is known in Germany, is one of the major landmarks in the captial city. At 368 metres, it's the fourth tallest freestanding structure in Europe. Even when not compared amongst the freestanding towers, it's still taller than the Eiffel which is 324 metres tall.
Visitors can go till the huge sphere from where they can witness a detailed panorama of Berlin. There's even a restaurant up there. Situated near Alexanderplatz, the landmark was at a walkable distance from our hotel.
