Fernsehturm in Berlin

Fernsehturm, Taken from Berliner Dom

The Fernsehturm Berlin behing a building on Museum Island.

The television tower was built 1965-1969 by the GDR government. At 368 metres in height it towers over the neighbouring buildings and can be seen from quite a long way off.

Detail from the Wikipedia entry:

"When the sun shines on the Fernsehturm's tiled stainless steel dome, the reflection usually appears in the form of a cross. This effect was neither predicted nor desired by the planners. As a jibe against the atheist foundations of the Communist government, and the ongoing suppression of church institutions in East Germany, Berliners immediately named the luminous cross Rache des Papstes, or 'Pope's Revenge'."

OK, you can't really see the cross here, but you can see some of the colour of the wonderful sunset there was that day.

The Fernsehturm (German for "television tower") is a television tower in the city centre of Berlin, Germany. Close to Alexanderplatz and part of the World Federation of Great Towers (WFGT), the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) administration who intended it as a symbol of Berlin, which it remains today,[1] as it is easily visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin.

The Neue Wache (New Guard House) is a building in central Berlin, the capital of Germany. It is located on the north side of the Unter den Linden, a major east-west thoroughfare in the centre of the city. Dating from 1816, the Neue Wache was designed by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and is a leading example of German neoclassicism. Originally built as a guardhouse for the troops of the Crown Prince of Prussia, the building has been used as a war memorial since 1931.

Fernsehturm, la tour de la télévision est-allemande, symbole de Berlin-Est.

The film is "Lomography Orca", a newly introduced black & white film for the 110 format. Production of 110 ceased a few years ago, so a new film is quite an achievement. Developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 10 minutes at 20 degrees.

Taken with an Olympus OM10 camera and a Sigma 18mm lens using Ilford Pan 400 film developed in Ilfosol 3.

The lens has four built in filters which are selected by turning a ring into one of four positions. This one was taken with the orange filter, which makes the blue sky look darker.

With a 30 sec. exposure shot and repeating shots from different angles, my fingers were freezing off... Shot taken with a Canon 500d, 18-55 is lens, and slightly edited in photoshop (layer in grayscale etc). Any comment or advice is welcome!

Background info: The Rheinturm Düsseldorf is a 240.5 metre high concrete telecommunications tower in Düsseldorf, Germany, capital of the federal state (Bundesland) of North Rhine-Westphalia. Construction commenced in 1979 and finished in 1981. The Rheinturm carries aerials for directional radio, FM and TV transmitters. It stands 174.5 metres high and houses a revolving restaurant and an observation deck at a height of 170 metres. It is the tallest building in Düsseldorf.

The Rheinturm was inaugurated on December 1, 1981. It contains 7,500 cubic metres of concrete and weighs 22,500 tons. Before October 15, 2004, when an aerial antenna for DVB-T was mounted, it was 234.2 metres high.

The original total height of the tower was 365 metres (1198 feet), but it rose to 368 m (1207 ft) after the installation of a new antenna in the 1990s. The Fernsehturm is the fourth tallest freestanding structure in Europe, after Moscow's Ostankino Tower, the Kiev TV Tower and the Riga Radio and TV Tower. There is a visitor platform and a revolving restaurant in the middle of the sphere. The visitor platform is at a height of about 204 m (669 ft) above the ground and visibility can reach 42 km (26 miles) on a clear day. The restaurant, which rotates once every 30 minutes[2], is a few metres above the visitors platform (originally it turned once per hour; the speed was later doubled following the tower's late 1990s renovation). The Fernsehturm is a television tower in central Berlin, Germany.

Close to Alexanderplatz in Berlin, the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the administration of the German Democratic Republic. It was intended as a symbol of Berlin, which it remains today, as it is easily visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin. With its height of 368 meters, it is the tallest structure in Germany.

The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the country and is often in the establishing shot of films set in Berlin. Due to its location near Alexanderplatz, the tower is occasionally called Alex Tower.

The Berlin Television Tower or Fernsehturm Berlin as it is known in Germany, is one of the major landmarks in the captial city. At 368 metres, it's the fourth tallest freestanding structure in Europe. Even when not compared amongst the freestanding towers, it's still taller than the Eiffel which is 324 metres tall.

Visitors can go till the huge sphere from where they can witness a detailed panorama of Berlin. There's even a restaurant up there. Situated near Alexanderplatz, the landmark was at a walkable distance from our hotel.

This too was handheld at 1/40, ISO 2000.
