View across part of the the southwestern Burren (County Clare, western Ireland) towards the 15th-century tower of Ballinalacken Castle, on a partly cloudy evening in mid-May. This view is from the West Clare coastal road along Galway Bay.

The Burren is an expanse of distinctive limestone karst landscape, which can appear very windswept and barren. While it is indeed windswept (we can attest to that point!), it is in fact home to wide variety of plants, including wildflowers characteristic of both Mediterranean and Alpine regions.

Ballinalacken -- also spelled Ballynalackan or, in Irish, Baile na Leacan -- which is located in the midst of fields and wildflower meadows on the edge of the Burren, is now the location of a hotel.

(The spellings Ballynalackan and Baile na Leacan are from the Placenames Database of Ireland, consulted 24 July 2015.)

I haven't been able to edit photos for the past several weeks since I have a new job as a high school photography teacher, but I should have new work available by the end of the month. Next week I am participating in Sonoma County's Art Trails Open Studios, come by if you are in town.

It rained all day, but in the evening it cleared and I went for a bike ride in the Ooijpolder.

The sky lights up with sunset color as a Sierra Nevada summer storm clears.

Our backcountry stay began with the absolute worst summer storm I can remember. Within seconds of getting our tent up the skies let loose with an hours-long barrage of extremely heavy rain, hail, thunder, lightning, and wind. Everything around us flooded, and we had a stream flowing under the tent. There was nothing to do by shelter in the tent and try to say dry and warm. We managed to escape briefly to eat a quick dinner, but the rain continued. It paused late that night… and then resumed very early in the pre-dawn hours and continued through most of the next day, albeit not as heavily.

Finally, late on day two, the storm broke. We began to see some thinning in the clouds to the west, and we began to hope for some interesting sunset light. Out we went, with each of us making guesses as to when and where the light might appear. At first I photographed the fog that was drifting back and forth among the surrounding peak, and then I began to turn my attention to the west, where I hoped to get some sunset color. Not much was happening there… and then I looked behind me to see see this scene developing!

Autumn evening on Učka mountain. The clouds were low and there was this red-pinkish atmosphere all around from the red leaves.

[ Lake Wingra, Madison ]One of the greatest wonders of nature is that there are always unexpected surprise. Driving by Lake Wingra in a pretty evening, I found this beautiful blue heron. Perhaps even better was that I had my camera gears with me.

A few photographers joined me as they spotted the heron. I hope everyone got something they liked.

Here is another photo taken in the early spring at the same location.

As I left my sons band concert this evening, I saw this incredible sunset, I had literally about twenty seconds to work with, I didn't even have a chance to change my lens, so here is a sunset taken with the Panasonic 100-300. :P
