“Cottonwood Grove, Evening” — Late-day light shines into a cottonwood grove along the Merced River, Yosemite Valley.
At the end of October I spent a couple of days photographing fall color in Yosemite Valley. Previously I posted about “three” main sources of fall foliage int he valley, listing big leaf maple, dogwood, and black oaks. But I left out another important tree, the cottonwood. This photograph was made within a grove of cottonwoods growing along a quiet section of the Merced River.
This particular spot is one that I’ve photographed quite a few times in the past. It is a little trickier to get there these days, since the park has limited access points in order to discourage visitors from trampling fragile locations that were once accessible. I had to search a bit to find a way to get here that didn’t violate the protected zones. Once I did, I walked along the river bank in later afternoon to this spot, where the trees grow thickly near the water.

A grove of old trees in late-autumn evening light.
This is the second of several photographs that resulted from going to some local holiday festivities — a big garden and mansion decked out in holiday lights and more... but it sure doesn't look like a holiday scene! After we arrived and parked our car we had to walk to the main facilities and along the way we passed this old grove. In the fading light (somewhat darker than the rendition in the photograph) it had a quality that was somewhere between slightly ominous and simply quiet and dark.
Typically I would probably use a tripod for a photograph like this one, but since our main reason for going to this event wasn't necessarily to make photographs I did not have one, so I cranked up the ISO and held the camera very still!

The theme for week 8 is "something beginning with E. This is Port Erin Bay lit by the Evening light just after the sun had set. It is a long exposure with minor tweaking from raw. It was also a rather chilly evening!
Evening in the harbour ... (Isle Rügen, Germany)...
This shot was taken 10.48 pm, so you can imagine the "darkness" here.... ;-)
An evening drive into the country on 2400N toward the setting sun. I like how all of the converging lines in this photo end at the setting sun at the top of the hill.
Seen near Piding, Bavaria. To the left of the tree, the Untersberg, to the right the "Sleeping Witch" of the Lattengebirge range.
A break in cloudy skies coming this evening over Hamilton. This view is from the cross at Devil's Punchbowl.
Every morning dawns in beauty and every evening blushes in all splendour. In between lies the opportunity to make our lives beautiful.
Evening all! Said in the old copper style. Don't ask what the heck I am on about.
Been a long hard two days with dance class on top of it all. So need a little more quiet me time. Not sure I will get any this year. Went for a different hair style tonight. Heaven knows what it will look like in the morning.
One evening as I was walking along a trail the sunlight was reflecting on something across the field and it caught my eye. I zoomed in and found it was a dragonfly. The sunlight was reflecting off it's wings and it was gorgeous!
I don't normally do street photography, but the colors of the sky caught my eye one evening in Edinburgh. So, not being anywhere near a hill with a clear view over the city, I simply took this photo from the street.
Probably not my best photo ever, but it does have a certain atmosphere about it.
