Pre WWI era gas blowing engines in a closed steel mill. Their purpose was to inject huge bursts of compressed air into the Blast furnaces to intensify heat & combustion. Similar to blowing on the embers of a camp fire but on a much larger scale. They were powered by a combination of natural gas and fumes redirected from the blast furnace exhuast stacks. The technology became outdated in the early-mid 1900s.

I've been scouring thrift and antiques stores always hoping to find one of these Fisher Price fire engines, and today I got lucky! My mother in law always had one of these for the grandkids to play with. This one looks brand new! $1.99. :)
