Westbound NS train 53Q has BNSF power in the lead as it splits the classic Wabash-era US&S H-2 searchlights at Dawn, just west of Tolono, IL.
53Q was lined through the Tolono passing track to clear the main for two eastbounds running close together.
I was told that this vintage Alfa was the most expensive car in a show room full of Alfas, Porshes and Ferraris.
It is owned by the owner of the business and worth in the order of $1.2M.
So I wasn't going to ask them to remove the red domes on the headlights, which is unfortunate as I think the large free standing headlights are always a highlight of these old traditional cars.

Despite having a relatively small skein, I am quite happy with how this one turned out. The two-tone throwing arm looks really nice, the "gears" for the skein are easy to produce and function well (with one or two minor changes for the next one)... I do believe I might be ready to make a pencil-shooting ballista now :-D

The engine is incredible. The experience of driving this car is not just the feeling of speed as you race down the road, but also the engine toying with your other senses. Firstly, as you change speeds, the engine makes a series of delightful noises. There is the ever present violent hum of the engine as it idles, which then becomes a rumble as you begin, and gradually grows into a growl, a throaty rumble, and then a satisfying whine as the engine speed reaches the higher end. Meanwhile, in the driver's seat, as the engine harmonizes with the frame of the car (and generally makes noise), you feel the seat itself shaking and vibrating. After driving for a while, if you place your hand on the rear wall of the cabin, or reach behind you with the convertible lid opened, you can even feel the heat just pouring out of the engine compartment.

A fine oscillatory steam engine ,spirit fired with safety valve , whistle and regulator valve. The boiler side plates appear to come from a Bowman model but the engine with its displacement lubricator and brass flywheel do not look like any commercial model I have seen.

Four men and a boy unloading coal from a sailing ship into flat cars with wooden walls. The boy is stoking the firebox of a portable engine that is being used to lift the coal hopper from the ship. [See comment from Wrecksdale Wreck below for more information on this.] Very similar picture to HMR1-06-81, but with another man in the centre foreground (presumably Frank Hall).
