Phantom faces at the window Phantom shadows on the floor Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friends will meet no more `Songwriters: L. David Lewis / Kim Williams / Ed Hill

CN B79191-31 rolls northward with 192 empty potash cars. CN 3912 (ES44AC) and 2441 (C40-8M) have make one last appearance in full sun before the train is concealed in long shadows.

Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form.

Form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form.

Sensation, conception, discrimination, awareness are likewise like this.

Drown, drown

Sailors run aground

In a seachange nothing is safe

Strange waves

Push us every way

In a stolen boat well float away

Little one

Hold on

All of the dreams are wasting

Several restaurants have closed due to covid

I took this shot about two months ago when the whole Alameda county started to enforce shelter-in-place. We could walk outside but must be within our neighborhood. The streets were literally empty just like this. I was probably the only one out there crazy enough to shoot with a film camera. But man, I do like empty streets.

With all that's happening here, with whom

does the smile remain empty?

And who turns their back to me?

Who carries on calmly, without expression

or turns their back to me?

On whom can I rely?

Sourire Vide

Avec tout ce qui se passe ici, chez qui

le sourire reste-t-il vide ?

Et qui me tourne le dos ?

Qui continue tranquillement, sans expression

ou me tourne le dos ?

En qui puis-je avoir confiance ?

We didn’t go to many museums in Japan, but the Hiroshima Museum of Art was on our list, and it didn’t disappoint. The museum had many famous Western paintings, but also Western-style Japanese painting, which I found very impressive myself. And the cherry on top was the Finnish lifestyle special exhibition!

I quite like the symmetry and the shadows on the floor.

Empty shops are a common sight on UK High Streets, but many vacancies are relatively short lived - the shops are soon in use again although in these difficult times, the new business might be short lived.

This collections portrays retail outlets that have been empty on a long-term basis. In some instances for many years. At some time, all these shops have housed thriving businesses. Yet now, for some reason, they are empty and in some instances falling into a state of disrepair and dilapidation.

Each shop has its own story to tell. Some are completely empty, others seem to have stopped trading suddenly and appear like the Marie-Celeste, still with stock in the windows. In many cases, we can tell easily from the faded signage what business was last operated from the shop. Others are a complete mystery with faded blinds or shutters and all signs removed.

I'm a big fan of minimalism and/or a sense of lonliness in photographs, whether it's a person or an object. From my preliminary testing of this photo, most people didn't really like it. They said it was unfinished, or half a photo. It looks too empty. You know what though, I like it. I like the idea that you're not too sure what's what's going on or where exactly you are.

I was walking up towards the spot where I knew the sunset would look best, and I saw this tree/bush/stick all on it's own on the cliff edge. In fact, the sunset shot, beautiful as it is, also has a sense of lonliness.

This photo was a single exposure, cropped and converted to cyanotype. I tried cropping it in all manner of ways and adding different treatments, but I always ended up back at this one.

I hope you like it, but if you don't, like most people, that's ok too. If you are one of the rare few who think it's good, let me know by all means.

Looks more lonely on black, especially if you stare at it for a while. (Press L)

I lost three of my dearest friends within a single year. Each of these losses was preceded by a long, draining and ultimately hopeless battle. The memories of them become inexorably abstract, overshadowed by daily challenges. The sense of profound emptiness remains.
