Leaving a smoke-filled valley in its trail, 760mm gauge Resita-built 0-8-0 tank 'Elvetia' 764-421 (Resita 1126 of 1954) heads a mixed logging train up the Vaser Valley on the Viseu de Sus system at Novat Delta on 17 March 2015. The line to the left is now abandoned and served logging in the Novat Valley for a further 13 kilometres. The line to the right, still used today, carries on to Coman, a further 30 kilometres from this junction, some 12.8 kilometres from Viseu de Sus.

Unloading is almost finished, and the 6D80 limestone train will soon form the 6H80 10.28 empties back to Tunstead.
At the time this service ran weekly, usually on a Wednesday. It was easy to capture as its speed through the unloader was so slow. Just as well, as coal workings were by then fairly infrequent as the last coal fired power station in the UK was due to close in 2024. The coal hoppers had arrived two days previously and the GBRF loco that brought them from Immingham left as a light engine.
On this day the temperature was just above freezing point with no wind, so it was on a fairly high output.
How we will miss these quiet giants that have been part of the UK landscape for over fifty years. This one started generating power in 1968 and has a maximum output of 2,000 megawatts.

A careful look at the pile of coal will reveal two yellow mechanical shovels. They are constantly moving the coal to prevent fires which would occur due to the heating process that happens as the coal 'composts'.

Riding the heels of a northbound intermodal train, CN 2107 and 2112 hustle the empty Thunderbird set back towards Fairlane for reloading at the mine. Due to Thunderbird Mine not having its pellet facility on site, mined rock has to take these shuttle trains to the pellet facility at Fairlane where the ore is crushed and then combined with limestone and bentonite clay before the finished pellets can be brought to the stockpile in Duluth.
Closed on Sunday.

Praise to the emptiness that blanks out existence. Existence:

CN 3216 makes up the power hauling an empty lumber train north along the CN Superior Subdivision at Bennett, Wisconsin. This train just met opposing traffic at Sauntry in Solon Springs. The tracks near Solon Springs got quiet for a few hours after this moved through. I love catching these empty lumber trains.
