Something has left my life,
And I don't know where it went to, ah, ha, ha.
Somebody caused me strife,
And it's not what I was seeking.
Didn't you see me, didn't you hear me?
Didn't you see me standing there, ah, ha, ha?
Why did you turn out the lights?
Did you know that I was sleeping?
... i loaded this for the empty spaces/ empty places project on polanoid!

An empty Oregon, California & Eastern log train heads for the reload at Sycan, Oregon. This image was shot from the Highway 140 overpass near Dairy. The track had been rehabilitated to the point that trains could zip along at 30 MPH in several areas.
er, empty billed, I mean. This male Gadwall came up with nothing on several diving attempts to catch a snack.

According to his stone, Conrad Keihn died on January 3, 1912 at the age of 15. However, there is nothing to be found in the local papers of it around that time.
Instead, two years later, we find a burial notice in the Spokesman-Review. On January 6, 1914, the paper states that Conrad "died at his home yesterday."
The "yesterday" is likely the 3rd as the notice would have been written a couple of days before it went to print.
Sometimes years pass before stones are placed at the burial site. Over those years, details and dates can be mislaid and forgotten. Finding one that is two years inaccurate likely points to an engraver's misreading of the instructions.
According to the paper, Conrad was 18 when he died. He was born in Russia and the family moved to Washington in 1899, when he was probably two years old.
Also in the cemetery is is mother, Anna Marie. She died in 1930. Before he death, she seems to have had at least six children. When she died, her youngest was 20. I assume she wanted to be buried next to her son.
The family moved to America with Conrad's grandparents (his grandfather and father were both named Conrad, which makes research a bit tough). His grandfather died in 1919. His father died in 1944, but is not buried in this cemetery, though it's not totally clear if it's even known where he rests.
All of this is speculation as there was another Conrad Keihn family living in the area. They too had a child named Conrad. And a grandfather with that name as well. It's possible they're the same family with two people doing shoddy research, however. At any rate, this is the stone of someone named Conrad Keihn who died far too young.
I shot this photo on a sheet of 4x5 film and used a darkslide cut in half lengthwise to achieve a "panoramic" effect. I don't do this often, and should definitely have done things differently with this (too much bokeh on the right, okay?), but there was always something about this photo that stood out to me.

I had booked a night in Östersund, Sweden on my quick trip to return our rental car to Oslo. I didn't know it would be Midsommar and that the small city would be virtually empty of people. I walked many empty streets looking for a place to eat, but everywhere I went looked like this photo, devoid of all signs of human life and activity! Eventually I chanced across Tre Rum Restaurant, whose bartender/owner told me it was the only place open in the city. It was bustling with the, I don't know, 40 or 50 remaining souls who had not left town for the countryside. I had a wonderful meal and a great time!

Sadly the two eggs that the marina swans laid early April have been removed from the nest. For three years the eggs she laid have been infertile but the parents sat on them for months. Last year the eggs were removed after about 3 months but this year I'd say they've noted when the eggs were laid and been ready to remove them if they are way over the incubation period. It must be so distressing for her as she's now busy building up the old nest.
