I've traveled the world teaching kids electronics. I do this for two reasons. One is because the kids are the future, and we're not teaching them enough science. In fact, we teach them to throw away electronics that break. And along with that, we as a society are throwing away future innovation.
The second reason is to bring electronics to those who aren't able to afford them. I owe a huge thanks to Adobe for this support, and to Brad Smith with Web Visions for putting up with me long enough to iterate through enough times to where we are getting pretty sophisticated projects going.
When I heard about the $9 Arduino crowdfunding opportunity, it struck a real chord with me, and I sponsored the development of the project.
With Arduino board being relatively cheap (~$30), it was questioned what difference a few dollars down to $9 could make. If we're talking about one board, then that might be true. If we're talking about a class of twenty, then it could make a big difference. The difference between turning away kids that want to learn, or giving them the tools to succeed. I'm looking forward to seeing what Borderless Electronics does next.

My barometric skirt takes data from the environment in the form of pressure, altitude & temperature - data one would often use to predict the weather and visualises it into colour via RGB LEDs. The barometric sensor sits outside the skirt, whilst inside another temperature sensor takes my reading. I'm interested in how my own data intertwines and is visualised as a colour value alongside that of my ambient environment.
The skirt is finally taking shape after 2 months of making the skirt itself from scratch, including painting it, then prototyping electronics on breadboard and then transferring to stripboard to be soldered, as well as coding acordingly. There's been a lot of unpicking, desoldering and redoing of things as 1. I'm not a seamstress and 2. the electronics I'm putting together from scratch components and there's been wires and components put together, then pulled apart and rebuilt! Instead of using a pre bought / assembled microcontroller board I've used the kit parts of a simple microconroller kit called a Shrimp which incorporates an ATmega 328 with a host of other components.

Pretty damn crude, but at least I know that the servo can lift that motor, I still need to hook it all up so it is under control of one circuitry (right now motor and servo are separate) so I can make it mimic the actions of one of the servos in my software simulation.
I'm still figuring out this whole electricity thing, I gotta make sure my circuit can actually power all the servos and motors at the same time.

There were many of those electronics shops where you would find Playstation and Wii on the first floor and it would get more and more explicit on every floor you're going up, where you would find Hentai DVDs on the 7th floor and normal pornography at the top floor.
I made a trip to the recycling facility. The car couldn't safely hold anymore stuff. It was a good day. The recycling effort by Allegheny County was noble in that it raised money for the humane society of Western PA.
