I was part of a group project on ecology in Bio 10B. We were assigned to gather data but what direction we went with it was up to us. We prepared a poster as a group and submitted it for class. But it was a very tight deadline and a compromise (as all group projects are). The group version of the poster is here: www.flickr.com/photos/spidra/26093356003
For some time I've been interested in how to make scientific posters look less boring, while still satisfying the rigor of science (and not falling too far afoul of scientific traditions). This poster session was my first opportunity to (a) make any scientific poster and (b) try to make one that melded my arts background with what I'm learning about doing and communicating scientific research.
I didn't have $75 and up to print a poster so I laid out fonts, font sizes, column widths, etc. in Apple Pages. I played around with designs using dummy printouts on the actual posterboard (buff colored because that was $6 and anything bright white or black would have been $18 and up). After much running up and down stairs (computer upstairs, big table downstairs) to rejigger and reprint, I finally pasted things down with rubber cement. Given my novice knowledge, low budget, and amateur equipment, I'm reasonably satisfied with how it came out.
