To loosen each dread I initially soaked my daughter's hair in conditioner, an entire bottle's worth. Then I rinsed all the conditioner out and unraveled each dreadlock with a fork. It took over 2 weeks to take them all out.

tshirt tube hair bands to hide my seriously sloppy roots. This was a surprise party for the Papa of the house. We, and a few of his friends, hid out at our local community theater just after rehearsal and lured him down there with a "plumbing emergency"....

One of the most isolated tribes on the planet, and a very laid back culture from what I could tell. Himba actually means beggar, and was a name given to them by surrounding tribes, when they arrived in the area with no land and no resources. The women never bathe, but instead take a scented smoke spa every morning, and cover their bodies in red ochre. The dreadlocks featured in this shot are a mixture of red ochre and mud, and are replaced every few months, while the 'hat' on her head advertises that she is married. The Himba have little understanding of money, and if you want to buy anything from them, it is usually $100, no matter what it is. However, they are happy to accept grains, maize or other food in exchange for photographs, and are still fascinated to see their images on the back display of a camera. I have promised to send prints, but apparently they don't last long, as they get covered in red ochre. Like many of the tribes in the area, the women are completely unselfconscious about being topless (which has some SFW challenge when showing holiday snaps), but jealously guard visual access to their ankles, which are hidden from view by rings of ankle bracelets, and only revealed to their husbands or lovers. I have some fascinating shots of village life, but need to work out how to tag as not SFW in this new flickr before I can post. How long they will renin isolated and uncontaminated, I don't know, but with couple of the youngsters starting to attend school, despite some strong opposition from tribal elders, this may be one of the last chances to see them as a living culture.
I couldn't resist taking this guy's picture. He has the longest dreadlocks I have ever seen. We got a slice of pizza in this place - doesn't look like the kitchen is very clean.

Had my assignment at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre for Petroleum Geology Conference & Exhibition.
Corporate Sales Executive and Learning & Development Manager from Petro Edge.
My first time meeting people from corporate division with dreadlocks, yeah!
This was taken by a holga, which is a silly "toy" camera- usually hard to get a good shot, but this one came out very nice :)
This is me, back in '07.
This tribute to hit-and-run victim, Dreadlock Mike (Mike Alston), is located near Eastern Market on Gratiot.
Dreadlock Mike was being pushed in his wheelchair by James Van Horn, the "Eat 'em up Tigers" guy, when a car hit and killed them both, then fled the scene.
And I still like them. They're starting to grow up a little and not need so much of my care...ha. I make it sound like they're my kids.

Wow...I can't believe it's only been 4 weeks. I'm finally to the point where I don't think about my dreads ALL the time. They are much more a part of me now...they are "just there". I am really enoying the ease of it all. I used to dread (sorry about the pun...hee hee) doing my hair in the mornings...and now I'm happy to get out of bed!

a great way to meet people of all sorts and to earn some money to supplement your travels with:
learn how to do something unique. if it's not just some crazy stuff like walking your hands but a skill that only a few can offer you're set!
i did create and maintain dreadlocks for people while i was backpacking new zealand. this is a real bad shot of me doing dreads in some strangers hair. met her on catherdral square in christchurch, new zealand. since i had to wait for some friend of mine i started to help her out with dreadding her hair.
Well I rather like my alt's roughneck/ pirate/ hippy (it's all a matter of perception) makeover but my dear friend Squashy sniffed..."hmm he really is TERRIBLY in need of a bath, isn't he?" lol
The texture is one built into the Picnik application- even after using it a while, I still find exploring the various features a lot of fun.
