This photo was taking in a studio using a speedotron with 3 lights set up.
I used a large soft box as my key light which I placed just a couple inches to the right of my subject at about 6ft away. I set a light up above her head with a grid to be used as a hair light. For the background I used a bare bulb directed up at the back ground.
SOOOOOOOO excited!!! can ya tell?!! This obviously isn't my most flattering photo (let us hope not, or I have a long life of don't get slapped on the back ugly jokes), and all the dreads are not yet complete, but the Handsome Papa has been working his manly fingers off dreading me up. This is AWESOME!! I have wanted this for years. Geronimo!

Just after I did a baking soda cleanse, an ACV rinse and a heckofalotta palmrolling. I still smell like a salad but I'm lovin my dreads.

My first set of dreadlocks, 1993. I started these in 1992. I wore a black scarf tied around my head, that's not my hair hanging down it's the scarf edges. The front of my hair was locked at the time too. I was 21! You couldn't tell me then I wasn't a grown Trula, LOL. My daughter took this pic.

Dreads are worn in Europe and the United States mostly as a fashionable hairstyle. In some cultures, for example, in Rastafari, they may have but also religious or spiritual backgrounds.
Within various youth subcultures, influenced mostly by music or politics, dreadlocks can represent an expression of creative self-fulfilment or dissociation.
god i'm such a poser! figured out how to keep my fat dread down. use both sleeves of a shirt! had to take some photos.
