A dramatic nighttime scene of a ferry ramp and docking mechanism, illuminated against the dark sky. The composition evokes a feeling of confrontation, resembling a battle between mechanical giants or even a reference to Jaws, as the open ferry ramp looks like a gaping mouth.
A few images from the Cliff Mautner workshop in Philadelphia/New Jersey. Workshops are limited 20 and sell out many weeks in advance. Participants come from all over the globe and this is a great way to connect with a great group of people and with a world class instructor.
I have been visualizing this shot for quite some time. I love the rich wood grain on my classical guitar and wanted to highlight it in a warm and dynamic way.
I finally figured out how to pull it off. I set up an umbrella above my right shoulder and fired a flash with an amber gel into it. In front and to the left of me, I used my gold reflector to bounce some warm light back into the shadows. The tough part was setting up to get the angles right as both photographer and guitarist!
I sucked everything into Photoshop and cut out/semi-transparent erased the areas outside the guitar and placed it on a dark background. Viveza then offered me the perfect control of the dynamic range of the different areas of the image. In this version, I applied the Low Key filter in my ColorEfex filter pack to create a more "moody" image.
You be the judge, which is better? The original is here. I don't know, I like them both....
So now I'm back to experimenting. At the moment, I'm really into capturing movement. For this photo in particular, I had a fan at the bottom, speedlight by the wall, and wanted to capture the flow of fabric. Sure it's a bit bunched up, but it did come out pretty nice I would say.
Day 71: SP
I've decided, if I were to ever make an album, this would be my cover. Look at that mystery of the slight silhouette :O
Setup:
-Yongnuo YN560 @ 1/8 power fired through an octabox to the camera's left
-Neewer TT560 @ 3/4 power fired bare towards the wall

"Ilaw Ng Tahanan"
Adrian Cruz

In this alternative I wanted to focus primarily on two things:
The dramatic lighting across Mitch's face, which I felt gave the portrait a masculine edge.
The primary colour triad coming from the red t-shirt, blue trousers, and yellow chair.
Strobist:
2 rim lights behind the model at 10 & 2 o'clock.
Just one big soft box to the right of frame firing on 1/2 power.
For Active Assignment Weekly - Dramatic lighting
WIT: I decided to shoot at night, with the light coming from window displays, smoking hot dog stands, subway vents, etc. Didn't quite work out, but at least I tried. I did not edit much - noise reduction, slight crop, and removed some glare.

We spent a bit over a week exploring southern France. From Lyon, to the Alps, then through Provence before wrapping up in the Ardeche.
These photos are from that trip.

September 18. Funny story about today's photo: I was going downtown with friends. I hadn't shot anything. I was ironing a shirt when my friend called saying he was outside waiting for me. And I hadn't shot anything yet. So i walked into my room, turned my flash on where it sat on my desk, grabbed my camera that was next to it, and snapped a few shots, and walked out the door.
Could be a lot worse :-)

A hush lives here.
Not just in the gesture, but in the gaze—soft, searching, and filled with something ancient for such a young face. There’s a story trapped in that stillness, held back by a single finger and a pair of watching eyes.
The world fades into shadow, but the light finds him—cradling his features like a secret being kept.
Black and white reveals what color hides: emotion, tension, silence.
This is not a moment.
This is the breath before a word. The quiet between thoughts. The pause where everything real exists.
