Across the ancient dark waters, a singular radiance broke through the oppressive, violet-black storm clouds like a celestial golden splinter. It was the eye of an ethereal queen, looking upon a forgotten harbor at the edge of the known world. On the shore, silent stone obelisks stood as sentinels of memory, each crowned by a single, dark bird that had seen the rise and fall of forgotten empires. The concrete promenade was a slick path to the edge of the abyss, where the ocean pulsed with the rhythm of distant, silent storms.

This luminous dawn in the midst of a storm was a spectral promise. It was said that once every hundred years, the sun would reveal its truest, golden nature, but only to those places shrouded in complete, somber night. As the light intensified, the silhouettes of a distant city to the right were momentarily bathed in a ghostly orange light, appearing as an impossible castle from a forbidden tale. The birds on the pillars did not move, for they were waiting for the golden splinter to fade, leaving them to their infinite watch over the silent, dark tides.

Dahvie Gloom, owner of GLOOM, sent me these really pretty eyes, and I am in LUST with them.

I blogged them in my most recent post, and I am going to be wearing them, or others by him for the next little while.

İSTANBUL - Some streets become quieter after midnight, but never truly empty!

[Written 10/28/15]:

My photoshoot today was quite an adventure! Previously, I had scouted some great locations for shooting landscapes in an area of Tampa surrounded by a nature preserve. I had my vantage point on a small hill all worked out, and was hoping for some sunrise magic with glorious shafts of sun beams piercing through the trees and a magnificently colored sky. Instead, in the darkness as I was driving to the site, it started raining cats & dogs. I muttered a few choice words under my breath, but then figured, "That's what they make umbrellas for!"

So I parked my car and with umbrella in hand, trekked out in the rain to "my spot". Fortunately, the rain let up after a while, but the sky was still so cloudy that I couldn't even see where the sun was rising. Despite the moisture in the air creating an ethereal mist, my shot wasn't happening... there was no magic. Maybe my "great" location wasn't so great after all! So I started moving around, and the moment I framed the waterlillies floating in the water amidst the glorious autumn treees in the mist, I could feel the magic. I shot and shot many exposures and positions, and unexpectedly, one good shot after another presented itself for the next hour.

I left the site with an utterly exhilerated feeling. That rush... isn't that what nature photography is all about??? :)

Breve storia del Santuario di N. S. della Guardia

Il Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia domina Genova dal Monte Figogna, a circa 800 metri d’altitudine. La tradizione narra che nel 1490 la Vergine apparve al contadino Benedetto Pareto, chiedendo la costruzione di una cappella sul luogo dell’apparizione. Da quel momento il sito divenne meta di pellegrinaggi sempre più numerosi, tanto che nel XIX secolo fu edificata la grande basilica attuale, consacrata nel 1889. Il santuario è oggi uno dei più importanti luoghi di culto mariano della Liguria e simbolo spirituale della città, visibile da lontano come un faro di fede che veglia sul porto e sulle colline genovesi.

A Brief History of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Guard

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Guard overlooks Genoa from Mount Figogna, approximately 800 meters above sea level. Tradition holds that in 1490, the Virgin Mary appeared to the farmer Benedetto Pareto, requesting the construction of a chapel on the site of the apparition. From that time on, the site became a destination for ever-increasing pilgrimages, so much so that the current large basilica was built in the 19th century, consecrated in 1889. The sanctuary is today one of the most important places of Marian worship in Liguria and a spiritual symbol of the city, visible from afar like a beacon of faith watching over the port and the Genoese hills.

A landscape photography piece capturing the volatile and breathtaking weather patterns of the UK's Lake District. This project explores the interplay between harsh, localized sunlight and oppressive storm clouds moving across Great How and the surrounding valleys.
