I am at present doing research into primary sources on the British Protectorate period from 1814 to 1864. I have the strongest sense that you need to have an understanding of the past to make sense of the present. In these old documents I am discovering much that helps explain current relationships between the British and the Hellenes and the present political environment of Corfu where we live, outside the summer months months.

My research continues. After looking initially at the period 1862-1864 I am going to give more attention to the earliest commissioners including Maitland who's writing appears in this image describing what he understands by the phrase 'protected subjects". It may be worth noting that 'subject' is a normal word in British Constitutional law. I am in 2009 a 'subject of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II'. There is no intent to imply that I am 'subjected' though I know that the term 'citizen' would probably be more acceptable that the traditional concept of a 'British subject'.

We then rallied between two guns and told them that they should not take one of us, as several of them had clubs one or two of our boys drew their bayonets when but for the interference of the officers there would probably have been some blood spilt. They seeing that they could not take us on deck (although they mustered 200 or over to our 25) thought they would play the hose on us where we were. They then brought it down and when the water was let on they turned it on us thinking no doubt that we would stand and take it but in this they were mistaken for we pitched in and after a little "pushing out from the shoulders" we succeeding in taking the hose away from them..."

Hele fire år gammel er denne "hermetiserte" popkonserten fra Madison Square Garden. Som det fremgår av tittelen er det Led Zeppelin, gruppa som stadig setter besøksrekorder, som er i aksjon.
Blandet opp i reportasjen fra konserten får vi "coca-cola-fotograferte" bilder av gruppas medlemmer privat, og noen kvasi-filosofiske innslag som muligens skal formidle gruppas budskap eller innerste lengsler eller hva det måtte være...
Den faste fansen vil muligens være fornøyd, for andre vil nok filmen fortone seg som et slitsomt dokument over plastalderen.

Over the last few years, Henk Breedland and Henk Landlust have been documenting the rebuilding of this sea dyke in the North of the Netherlands. The work has recently been completed and this was the last time they photographed it.

RECORDS OF THE HAND INN, TREUDDYN
The Hand Inn is an ancient public house in Treuddyn which, according to tradition, was visited by Prince Llewelyn ap Gruffydd in 1275 (See: Flintshire Pubs & Breweries, D. Rowe (2009). Flintshire Record Office has recently taken in a deposit of fascinating records relating to the inn, which chronicle its ownership between 1803 and 1990 (Ref: D/DM/1836).
The collection includes a feoffment dated 30th April 1803, in which a public house with outbuildings and appurtenances, near to the ‘Chapel of Tryddyn’, was granted to Evan Davies of Treuddyn, Gentleman, for the sum of £210. The deeds and documents show the conveyance of the Hand Inn through various owners, including John Griffiths of Treuddyn, Victualler, who held the Inn in 1844; and John Ingman of Treuddyn, Publican, who took over in 1848. The Hand Inn was sold by auction by Jones & Son at Pontblyddyn on 22nd November 1887 and by 1990 it was owned by Marston, Thompson & Evershed PLC. It later became a privately owned house.
The records in this collection were deposited on behalf of the late Dr J. Ingman, who collected them as part of his research into the Ingman family history. Anyone interested in studying the history of this ancient inn can view the records at Flintshire Record Office (appointments are necessary).

In the 1980s, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources developed a statewide bicycle touring networking known as the "Hoosier Bikeway System". Each route had a set of maps and cue sheets, and the routes also had pavement markings. This system continues to be featured in DeLorme's "Indiana Atlas and Gazetteer". However, this publication doesn't provide enough detail to follow the routes, and the road markings are no longer visible.
In 2002, the program was eliminated, as being "underused and outdated" and costing "approximately $25,000/year to maintain".
Most recently, this recent planning document states that the DNR plans to invest in bicycle touring routes: "The Indiana Department of Transportation is taking a lead role in promoting alternative transportation by currently working on a state bicycle plan that will cover bicycle routes throughout Indiana."
My contact at the DNR clarified just a few days ago:
"There are many people that would like to see a statewide bicycle route system, but it would have to be something different from the Hoosier Bikeways. The Hoosier Bikeways was designed for self contained overnight travel and there just are not very many bicyclists that really bicycle like that. Plus, DNR did not have the staff or financial resources to keep up with a statewide system that involved almost a thousand miles of roads that were constantly under repair, being altered, or changing traffic patterns. Besides, it seems that most people want to go out on a day ride at most and usually end up back where they started. That is why we are encouraging local routes be developed and maintained. If all counties were to develop local routes, then connections could eventually be made between these routes and we could build toward a statewide system."
In the meantime, he was kind enough to supply me with some remaining cue books from the old network. The shape is designed to fit in a handle-bar bag for direct use on a bike, and the elevation charts and routes are still interesting, even if they are dated.
Fascinating document which details many of the air raids in the town of Chelmsford in Essex (UK) during the second world war from when the first raid took place in 1940 to the last in 1945.
Included are the bomb type, where they fell, the damage caused, the date, the time of day and the number of casualties. This document is in 4 parts.
