This volume containing the Book of Common Prayer and Psalms, belonged to the author of The Water Babies, Charles Kingsley.
Charles Kingsley was the second son of the Rev. Charles Kingsley and his wife Mary, neé Lucas. The prayerbook records the marriage of Mary and Charles and the births of their first four children.
Mary Lucas was the daughter of Nathan Lucas, a judge who had inherited slave-run sugar plantations in Barbados. He married Mary's mother Mary Crookenden at St Philip's church, Barbados in 1785.
Mary Crookeden herself was born in Barbados, the daughter of Potts Crookenden who was born in London, probably in 1727.
The prayerbook has copies manuscript notes including accounts of travelling from Barbados to England and births and marriages in Barbados which can be confirmed from church records.
The prayerbook has been owned by the public library service in Plymouth, England, since the late 1940s and is now in the care of the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office.
The Belgian refugees arrived in Ireland (1914 - 1915) as a consequence of the First World War. Initially, Irish Jesuits were asked by the Local Government Board (17 October 1914) to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The majority of the documents relate to offers to house refugees and schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

Historian and author Joel Helander of Guilford presented the biography of Captain Oliver N. Brooks, a distinguished captain during the heyday of the Long Island Sound coastal trade, as well as the Faulkner Island lightkeeper from 1851 to 1882.

Cane Hill Hospital opened in 1882 as the Third Surrey County Lunatic Asylum. Following a gradual winding down of operations, it closed all but its secure unit in late 1991. It formerly housed up to 2,000 patients but was heavily underused by the time of its closure.

Sotheby's auctioned off a historic manuscript of Jane Austen's The Watsons. It was estimated at £200,000-3000,000, but eventually sold for almost £1 million!

Lots of cool tidbits on the back of this card. I like the stamp for sure with the micrometer. The date is helpful mailed in July 1964. Very nice that they marked the room on the front with an "X marks the spot" and they told us it's room # 20. If you're a wigwam fan like me that's very cool info!
