This booklet is in the name of Nathaniel Morgan and dated 1836. It contains copperplate script handwritten details of William Jones' will, information about the Hatcham Estate, income, running costs etc.
I bought this on eBay. It's a list of the town's militia in 1843. Most of the names are familiar to residents here. For example, the school is the Blanchard Memorial School. The Priests still live in town as do many of the other people listed here. This past year, our town finally realized a long-held dream of opening a historical museum. This will be a gift to that museum. The document is approximately the same age as my house, which I find pretty amazing.

Edgar Silveira, famed Goan food photographer, wished to know if there was any old Goan cook book. Hence this picture of a book which I found in our kitchen collection. "The Goan Cook's Guide vo Goan Cuzneracho Sangat", was written by Pedro Damiao Dias. BX Furtado & Sons, Bombay, the pioneering Goan book sellers in Bombay, had published as their fourth edition - revised and enlarged - in 1937. "The Goan Cook's Guide" is a hardbound book in 399 pp including the index. The book has been written in Konkani, mother-tongue of Goans. In its Foreword, we find: "Hem novem edicao jem ami choutie pautim xaplam, 1937 vorsa, galun 50-ec vhoir novim dissanchi reciptam, zim toiar keleant, (1) Senhor Benjamin Pereira-anem (Sangolda, Goa), Chefe de Cusine, Bombay Club, and (2) Senhor L.S. de Mello (Nerul, Goa), Chefe de Cusine, Brandon's Restaurant, G.I.P. Rly, Bori Bunder. Tanche photos ami hea livrar ditaum. Hem tistrem edicao, him novim ceiptam galun, quelam up-to-date anim zobor gorjechem."
First lesson in the Eleanor Winters' book "Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy": 8 basic strokes for lowercase letters, and simplest lowercase letters.
I finally have completed the first project off of my Pratt Albion hand-press. It's a short essay on the origin of the term "Devil's Tail" which applied to the lever of a hand-press, and how it came to be the name of my private press. Printed on 25 year old Mohawk Letterpress paper which I have dragged all over the country, using hand-set Rhapsody, Garamond, and French Clarendon types, with a 24 point Vendome 'H' turned upside down, which serves as an initial. The blue border is an ATF Clelland border, as is the ornament under the title. It took over 1100 inked impressions to complete it — I didn't bother to count the hours, but each impression averaged about 2 minutes. Printed as a contribution to "It's a Small World", which has been published for 60 years, the new edition, soon to be issued, is No. 61.
The card was sent from Parker's Hill, Sunningdale, to Mrs Ripley at 49 West Hill, Sydenham, SE26
It reads:
"Please note correct address not 'hill' on the Sunning. Hope you did not get a scare last night we heard guns at 8.30 we thought. Am looking for PC [postcard] later[?] from you - no news from France this morning. Kids are very good an obedient. No idea when the others will be back. Love MaR"
I was hoping someone would be able to transcribe the sender's name, as this is the sender of a large number of the 100+ cards in this album. I'd originally thought it might be Mark or Matt, but EastMarple1 (see comment below) spotted the fact that it was to a Mrs Ripley rather than Miss, and that it could be MAR, the initials of Margaret Adele Ripley. So she was the sender rather than the recipient.
