In the 60s, during a banquet feast at the famed Port Arthur Restaurant on Mott Street in Chinatown, a very kindly salesman gave me a tie tack in the shape of a tiny golden lighthouse that lit brightly using a tiny battery.
These next two drawings show more or less one kind of process I use frequently. Cheap materials (xerox correction fluid, highlighters, ballpoints), a growing list of referents from anywhere in my mind that relate as I continue my design and a drawing style that complements this (I hope). The design is the drawing, text and references. In the Chinese style of funereal objects as Ming Qi, substitutes for objects and gifts for the dead abound.
Do these designs work? Only loosely. Are they functionally useful? Only loosely. Should they be built? Only abstractly, on paper and in thought. My fantasies are focused on the people and their lives for whom I am making these.
Here in this proposed design, the street photographer Vivian Maier inspires a remake of the Tessina for a watch camera dedicated to the late NY Times Architectural critic Ada Louise Huxtable whose book, "skyscraper-style" inspires in return a dedication to Maier's milieu. I like to work in doubles; if I could pick an iconic symbol for my own process, it would be a peanut in a shell.
The skyscraper cube detaches from it's wristband and extends to full-length before attaching onto an iPhone with a light tight seal of blu-tack that is originally stored in the skyscraper's base in a fresh plastic wrapper like a piece of gum. The top of the skyscraper is a dark slide that may have to be assembled and then inserted halfway in to use the viewfinder, the twin lens recalls Maier's Rolleiflex. Why did Leica never make a twins lens reflex design? When the subject is focused, pulling the dark slide all the way up allows the mirror inside to reflect the image towards the iPhone lens. By the time we all get to see this made in prototype, perhaps an iPhone app with an SLR function will have been invented to attach in this manner. Except for the iPhone attachment, this wrist camera function just like the legendary Tessina.

The British ministerial red box is refitted with the layout of a Japanese dressing-case (I was looking at a photo of one belonging to Elizabeth Branwell) to be a club box for the Mercantile Library, one of New York's best kept secrets. A club box brings aspects of an old fashioned gentlemen's club to a locale, in the style of a portable bar. Here the Mercantile Club box completes the experience for this fiction and mystery library of old New York.
It might be seen as a sort of indoor picnic basket except that it has a compartment for a very special commemorative red Leica Monochrom whose lens is a glass fragment from an old brownie. I chose a Monochrom as a b&w-only camera would subtly point to the past, imparting a nostalgic flavor as a homage to Hawthorne. As the Monochrom has no iconic Leica red dot, this one-of-a-kind Leica would be totally red, so it would leave us no doubt as to what brand it could be. As a kit, this camera outfit is in the style of the "Kodak Ensemble" (circa 1929). There would be little use of formal portraits, as it's more suited for antics at the Drones Club and attuned to the lighthearted fare of the Mercantile's book stacks. As conversation, food and piano playing are welcome at this library (how refreshingly distinct), the club box offers a generous cheese course for two with port, biscuits and a tray of vintage Romeo y Julieta cigars (small gauge, extra long). There are many dividers and aeration so one can serve washed rind cheeses for example, or even a salad course (like stuffed avocados). The real difficulty about this club box & humidor is simply having a driver to carry it around for you.
This design is dedicated to the actor Nigel Hawthorne. No doubt this prop would have come in handy for the numerous club scenes in his tv series "Yes, Minister".

Unlike the 40th Anniversary Bond film "Die Another Day", this "Vanquish" camera does not require any CGI to inflate its production costs. Its highly reflective, mirrored surfaces provides a cloak of near-invisibility (or "adaptive camouflage", as Q says) for the street documentary photographer (his ultimate fantasy). When this camera, a stylized "Giant Brownie" is fully set up with its two side panels opened, it resembles a mirrored wall so care must be taken to watch out for flying birds, absent-minded texting pedestrians (although in Paris they don't walk and text like in Manhattan) and cars, hence the mandatory ear 'speakers' and reflective patches to be worn while shooting. As an added bonus, the reflected city views from the camera blending subtly into the background make it a piece of sculpture or mobile architectural folly.
Linking the Bond mystique to the masters, this is the perfect daytime camera for Eugene Atget if he chooses to compose the scene in an unobtrusive way. With an Aero Ektar lens he will need time and patience (with only a Telex rangefinder to help him). He'll probably be shooting street details with the dof of this lens. At night, this camera converts on the site to a serene Asian-styled beacon and functions in the opposite way in the dark. It doesn't shoot night scenes, recalling Atget's era. It doesn't vanquish the night, it reveals it.
A Giant-sized Brownie only helps to inflate its own iconic presence, invisibility and effect. A full Parisian outdoor cafe is inside the ample housing with live bistro views from the two hidden viewfinders. A tiny built-in espresso machine (from Nespresso) and bar which only serves a signature drink, a Perrier Menthe, recalling that Atget frequently shot his "Documents pour Artistes" in the early morning and probably would have liked a refreshing drink and cafe after the shoot.
The Giant Brownie "Vanquish" assembles quickly with powerful magnets attached to the mirrored acrylic panels. A very modern flash unit has been machined to look like a vintage powder flash of Atget's era, yet it holds the portable Telex rangefinder, cable shutter release, ear buds and reflective patches all hidden inside attached to the camera with a winding coil. Using a pull-out unit like this is part of the theatre of a Bond film, something that would excite its user. The stripped down Speed Graphic has a lead enclosure to protect the film.
A "Little Nellie" case (from "You Only Live Twice") holds the entire kit compactly.
Of course this camera isn't a sports car with projection cameras but it is almost as thrilling a spectacle on Atget's turn-of-the-century Parisian streets.
Electricity for both the beacon lamp and espresso machine is to be provided from any local store utility via a simple cord to an outlet.

Sometimes, a lot of the times, actually, I listen to one song and one song only, over and over for days on end. It’s like every time I hear it, I find something new in the song, a different lyric, a different chord, a different sound that hits my heart, and stays with me. It stays with me for days, weeks, a month maybe. The song consumes me, and it’s all I can think about, but in a good way most of the time. Sometimes it’s the bad way though. The song will remind me of a better time, that I can no longer get back and it kills me, and I cry and cry, about everything and nothing. Tears upon tears pouring out and overflowing. And yet, I continue to listen, knowingly accepting the emotions that come with it, knowingly embracing all of these thoughts I can’t stop thinking, even if i wanted to. Maybe that makes me a fool, but I love the songs entirely too much to stop.
Manuscript title: Silver Book of the Land
Manuscript summary: On 86 leaves of parchment, the Silver Book of the Land contains the statutes of the entire region of Appenzell. It is an assemblage of older legal texts; at a later time more recent statutes were added to it. Following the division of the region of Appenzell that took place in 1597, the book became the property of the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden and remained valid into the 19th century. Rich decorations consisting of miniatures and initials indicate the great importance attributed to this volume.
