I wanted a diffuser for my flash, and I was feeling crafty. So, I built one. It's made of cardboard, nice white paper, gaffers tape, duct tape and glue, and it took me about 3 hours to design and build.
Done! All velcroed to the flash, and it does an okay job diffusing the light, without too much loss of flash power.
a total of just over $2.40 got me a very cheap gary fong imitation light diffuser! all of these are unedited pictures.

For this photo, I had a diffused light with a red gel to Thomas's right. I set up two low-powered backlights behind him, and had the backlight to his right reflect off the wall. Finally, I had a reflected blue light to his left.
Editing took a while. I basically tried to create a bunch of haze using different brushes and blurs. I used a reference image to get the colors right. I used a few different shapes to create little pieces of light, most noticeably the blue lines behind Thomas's shoulder. I had quite a few shots of just bokeh from recent months and was able to use those photos to help this image. Using color balance, curves, hue, and blending modes, I tried to make the bokeh blend in with the background. Thomas's shirt was pretty bright, so I darkened it.
This photo fits with the rest of my concentration because of the intense lighting, the subjects' pose, the unity/variety, the cinematic grading and crop, and the red and blue color.

This example of lighting is considered diffuse because the whole sky is used as the light. The sky as the light makes the picture diffuse since it is light in general but can't tell where it is specifically coming from.
