Trying to learn lighting basics but shooting anything that is transparent or clear glass is, the, most challenging. You need to get right background, highlights, edges of glass etc. Trying to learn from Strobist blog and plenty of other videos from Youtube.
For above shoot, used white paper behind & at base plus on camera right and left as well for reflections. Used Stofen Omni bounce diffuser on SB-600. Flash is held above bottle just outside frame and beam targeted behind on white paper. Although used custom (preset) whitebalance on D80, somehow image came out with bluish tint so need to find something else which is more pure white. I am definitely looking for acrylic sheet now....

Comparison with and without the diffuser. The two images on top were obviously taken with the diffuser employed. The tone is noticeable warmer and the shadows are not as harsh.
I built a flash diffuser out of two 24 ounce styro cups, lined with foil on one side to reflect the light outward.
I mounted them enwise onto a Vivitar 283 flash unit with a flash trigger sensor on it, and mounted a small Vivitar flash on camera facing straight up to trigger the remote unit without affecting the exposure.
These shots were taken in bright sunlight at f/11-f/16 @ 1/160sec.

Dramatic effect if you take off the diffusors from the flashes at the same distance as the previous image.
First shot with my latest homemade flash reflector/diffuser. It reflects the onboard flash so that it lights up right in front of the lens as needed for these shots, and diffuses the light to cut down glare.

Just a little shot to show off what my mini diffuser can do. This shot is from the built in flash on an EOS 20D. No harsh shadows and more even light than usual. With less direct flash there's more ambient light so the balance is a bit warmer as well.

My new Cokin Diffuser 2 filter (P840) arrived yesterday, so I thought I'd try it out with some soft-focus shots of the dog.
I'm quite pleased with this shot, as it captures Oscar's face in a good, soft light. It was difficult to choose between this shot and the one that ultimately became my 365 shot of the day but I chose the other shot as it was slightly more abstract.
Looking forward to practicing more with this filter, as I don't think I was using it to it's fullest effect tonight.
