Picture of my daughter. Main light was a single 580 EX II, on which I had mounted a Photoflex mini softbox. That was about 6 feet away from the subject on camera left. About one foot from the subject on camera left was a 4' wide by 8' tall pvc DIY frame inspired by Dean Collins's lectures, covered with one layer of ripstop nylon. For fill, a silver 45" Photoflex reflector was on camera right about one foot from the subject.

truly enjoying my class...especially when the instructor tells me that this was a textbook example of diffused light.

I like the diffused lighting caused by the very light fog. Reminds me of some old western paintings in a way.
I wanted a diffuser for my flash, and I was feeling crafty. So, I built one. It's made of cardboard, nice white paper, gaffers tape, duct tape and glue, and it took me about 3 hours to design and build.
Everything cut out. I cut the white pieces a little smaller than the cardboard. For the white paper, I picked up some heavy matte photo inkjet paper that was on super-sale.
Ed kept the diffuser high so the family could get a quick look at the back of the camera.

image of the day and testing second 430EX II fired remotely (at +/-0) through stofen diffuser and bounced off a diffused 80cm umbrella on a stand. quite happy with the result and celebrated with some some chocolate ... coloured filtering in post processing!
Will try it with both 430s at some point and maybe turn the brollies to shoot-through rather than bounce.
oh, and re previous comment Becka on a similar shot, this is simply the light fitting above our dining table, nothing fancy really ...
