today we went to taco bell for lunch at 130 cause that's when we woke up, haha and then we went swimming for a while and then went to Tommys house where we basically just hung around till his dad took us to see the fireworks. Me and Tommy ended the night with Ihop. It was a good weekend.
I am going to miss Tommy so freaking much when he moves back home.

Spent a rather awesome afternoon with my friend. Took 3 1/2 rolls of film! Looking forward to see them developed.
It was a good weekend. Back to work tomorrow!

Here are three different galls on leaves of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) that all merit the name "rolled leaf galls". I believe these are all proper galls and not the work of leaf-roller insects because the cellular structure of the leaf has actually been changed and not just mechanically folded and tied down. I believe the gall on the right is the work of Woolly Oak Aphids in the genus Stegophylla, see this photo and this photo. The leaf is rolled over the top, which is different from the leaf in the center which is rolled under the leaf. The oddest one is on the left, which is a real "leaf roll" that leaves some of the edge of the leaf free and seems to be closed on each end, like a sushi roll. I don't know what critter is responsible for either of these other galls. I suppose I should open a few up, though I hate to disturb whatever is in there. (San Marcos Pass, 24 November 2020)

1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th shots are 18mm shot with AF-S. The focus points are different.
5th shots are AF-S through liveview which is much better than the previous 4 shots. The last one is manual focus through liveview mode. Reason I use live view mode because it can zoom in the focus point so that I can adjust the focus more accurate.

Here are two shots of a different gall on the apex of a leaf of Scrub Oak (Quercus berberidifolia) in the Fagaceae plant family. It doesn't seem to match anything in Ron Russo's "Field Guide to Plant Galls" (UC Press, 2006) or Joyce Gross's fine California Oak Galls website. Maybe it's a new one? It looks quite distinctive with that crown of points around the top. (San Marcos Pass, 18 November 2014)
I'm pretty sure this is the gall of a Cynipid Gall Wasp (Cynipidae, Hymenoptera). There was a tiny exit hole on the bottom, so I figured the gall was empty. I removed the leaf and tried to pose it for a photo, but it fell away and got lost. See my [Next] photo.
We stopped at a little rest stop along the U.S. highway we took back toward Madison and had a nice little picnic lunch of sandwiches we'd picked up from the Prairie du Chien Piggly-Wiggly. I'd stopped at this same rest stop during my lightning drive across Wisconsin last February and had taken a picture of this farm at the base of the hill. Remember this picture? This is what that spot looks like in its summer colors.
These two chicks look very different, but presumably were from the same litter? The one on the left is a mallard chick but the one on the right looks as much like a cygnet as anything! There were some domestic white ducks mixed in with the mallards on this pond, so I assume these are the result of a cross?
