Well you you've got to admit "The Golden Arrow" is a bit different in Lancashire, complete with Union and Tricolore flags on the front. West country pacific No34092 Wells approaches Townsend Fold on a cold frosty morning 16th Jan 2016.
The rain was well-timed in that it passed overnight and once some minimal fog burned off it was another day of abundant sunshine. The radio was relatively quiet as I made my way across town and there didn't seem to be anything happening on the hill, nor at the south end of the yard. At the north end however, was 357 parked on the mainline for a crew change. Despite the all too common GEVO up front it was going in the right direction and I had some summer morning northbound shots in mind.
I've mentioned the trees taking over at the places I revisited but nothing compared to the forest that has sprung up at Van Dyne. Van Dyne had been the go-to place for elevated views where you could include the two mainlines, sometimes two trains, or nice sweeping panoramas looking east towards Lake Winnebago. Now I had to pick my spot and carefully time my shot according to gaps in the tree shadows. 357 is coming up the "SOO side" and the side track has been lifted. The "CNW side" is now Main 2 and obscured by the trees at left. July 21, 2024.
The bird in front is a Brown Pelican, the one I see most often, and until you see them together, only then do you realize how large the White Pelican is. That's a Cormorant behind the White. Sanibel Island, Florida, 2014.

Spot the difference! This is the countryside, nature as intended.. not that the nature found in the city's parks isn't beautiful... but far outside the city's walls you'll find just that extra bit of extra magic.
The difference in the structure of this spider web and the one on the previous image is quite striking - 2D vs. 3D...
Obviously, both strategies work for the makers of the webs.
...one of those moments when the light makes a difference...in my opinion of course...

Happy weekend my friends !
I suppose the main difference between what I do and how a regular girl lives is I am not just the me you see, Iike a chameleon I change my appearance to portray the way I feel that day. It's a bit of a nuisance as I would love to have the confidence or perhaps desire to go out and be all the time the beautiful long-haired blond you see here. I don't think it means I'm faking it and I'm sure a lot of women would love to have the same kind of elasticity and be how they feel. .

What a difference a day makes...
After the blizzard and strong winds of yesterday I awoke to a hard frost, clear air and blue skies. I just had to go back to Ribblesdale to see whether my sculpture from yesterday had survived and to try and get the ice shine pictures I originally envisaged.
And, oh boy, I wasn't disappointed!
Fresh snow had fallen and the wind had carved it's own wonderful sculptures. Aretes and fins aplenty and amazing meringue shapes around holes and dips. As we walked up to the place I couldn't see the sculpture and I doubted whether it was still there but as we got closer suddenly I saw it. The ice windows were much more translucent and the sun shone through strongly. This was perfect and exactly how I had imagined it.
But like a total fool I had left the pencil eraser, that fixed my camera yesterday, in a different jacket pocket and it started to play up again, and again and again. But despite it's lack of cooperation I still got what I wanted.
We hadn't gone there to do any Land Art but I couldn't resist a quick doodle before we went back to the car and slithered our way up the icy hill. A fitting end to my Christmas break as work looms large for tomorrow.
To Matt: it's about 3 feet high.

What a difference a few days makes...
A wildfire on the western end of Buck Pond started around 3:00 this afternoon and raced to the southern end of the pond by 6:30 when I shot this photo.
Neighborhoods were evacuated, roads were closed and smoke was seen for miles. Fortunately there were no injuries or property damage and the sunset was spectacular.
The photo below is from the same spot this past Thursday...

How to cross the eyes to see this 3D? Don't think too much, the stereo illusion in this pair isn't very logical, but it's there.
Recently repainted 19362 MX08UDN looks a little different as it currently lacks the Stagecoach logo on the front panel as it runs through Audenshaw on a 216.
And now for something completely different. Lineside clearance!
Well the difference is we are many miles further north from our usual haunts around Kinchley Lane. This time the Wednesday gang helped by Andy, the FoftGCR chairman and a director of GCR (N), responded to a call to clear vegetation from around underbridges 302 & 302A on Gotham Moor so that the bridge inspector can carry out his work without having to fight with brambles etc. Some of us walked the "half mile" from 50 steps bridge... I think this is GCR Bridge 301.
The results of the inspection will help determine when the line between Ruddington & East Leake will see trains again.
