This is the sad eye of a beached 20-ton sperm whale that appeared on Redcar beach earlier today. The streams of water are from a fireman's hose, one of many efforts to save the animal. The poor animal died soon after this picture was taken.
On March 15, 1921, Talaat Pasha, former Grand Vizier (Prime Minister), Interior Minister, and head of the "Three Pashas" that controlled the Ottoman Empire in its last years (1913-1918), stepped out of his home in exile in Charlottenburg, Berlin, when a young Armenian, Soghomon Tehlirian, stepped up in broad daylight and pulled out a gun. Pasha was shot in the head and killed instantly with a single bullet in front of numerous witnesses. Tehlirian was promptly arrested.
Put on trial, Tehlirian had a sensational two-day case where his defense attorneys admitted the young Armenian's guilt but argued that the Armenian Genocide, which occurred under the rule of- and has been believed initiated by- Talaat Pasha, and which took the lives of 1.5 million Armenians, including Tehlirian's father, mother, three sisters, and two brothers and a niece, had greatly affected his sanity. The trial went in detail about the intricacies of the Armenian Genocide, and vividly described an attack on Tehlirian's family as they were forcibly deported, the assaults on Tehlirian's sisters and how he personally was left for dead. According to the trial, years later upon encountering Pasha in Germany, Tehlirian was consumed by a burning sense of revenge and eventually took his vengeance on Pasha. When asked by a judge whether he felt any guilt, Tehlirian replied that: "I do not consider myself guilty because my conscience is clear…I have killed a man. But I am not a murderer."
The jury took about an hour to declare him not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
Later, more details came to light that gave a more complete and complex picture. Soghomon Tehlirian was an Armenian from Erzurum in what was then the Ottoman Empire, who had been in school in Europe when WWI broke out and quickly volunteered to join Armenian volunteers in the Russian Army after hearing about the deportations and his family's death. He did not appear to have actually been with his family at the time of their attack, but may have encountered the results of the genocide during the course of the fighting. Far from an emotional spur-of-the moment attack, Tehlirian appears to have been in a complicated campaign by Armenian activists (The Armenian Revolutionary Foundation) after WWI to take their revenge on Turkish and Azerbaiji officials whom they claimed to have initiated and participated in the Armenian Genocide, known as Operation Nemesis (named after the Greek Goddess of Vengeance). It may have also included British and Soviet intelligence sources as those powers may have been afraid of the power of some of those political exiles.
Regardless, Soghomon Tehlirian's assassination and trial for the first time put to light the idea of a "just" crime to avenge a far greater crime. Indeed, Jewish-Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin would write, referring to the case:
"Why is a man punished when he kills another man? Why is the killing of a million a lesser crime than the killing of a single individual?"
Lemkin would later create the word "genocide" to describe "the destruction of a nation or an ethnic group".
After being acquitted in the trial, Soghomon Tehlirian married Anahit Tatikian and moved to Serbia, then Belgium, before moving to San Francisco in 1945. He died in 1960 and is buried here under a monument dominating Ararat Cemetery in Fresno. According to the artist, the monument is topped by a golden eagle as "...the arm of justice of the Armenian people extending their wrath onto Talaat Pasha," symbolized by the snake. Soghomon Tehlirian remains a national hero in Armenia.

A coloured French soldier from Troupes de Marine, most likely Senegalese, is singled out to have his photograph taken with a Uhlan NCO and military official. Many of the Senegalese and other colonial troops were in the Troupes de Marine and were reported to have fought with incredible valour and great sacrifice.
Montage of advertisement for Dior Addict. Controvertially, allegations were made linking a campaign slogan "Do you admit to it?" as a reference to "burgeoning" cocain use. The imagery was subsequently replaced with a grumpy looking girl surrounded by pink petals.

A marble reblica of the statue Dying Gaul stands in in the foyer of the La Maison Francaise Building at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. The original statue was commissioned some time between 230 BC and 220 BC by Attalos I of Pergamon to honor his victory over the Galatians. The statue at Assumption was a gift from Bishop (later Cardinal) John J. Wright, D.D. who was the first bishop of the Diocese of Worcester.

Designed by Kumiko Inui, the Dior flagship store building has a distinct multi layered, translucent façade. The façade contains two overlapping sheets of aluminium.

I have just discovered I have been using the Rollei close-up lenses (Rolleiparkeil) the wrong way! In this picture I have everything where it should be!
