Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer and fasting. On the day of the festival, devotees will shave their heads undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, notably carrying various types of kavadi (burdens).

Welcome to a night in the office from hell.

It’s 1983 and in an abandoned workplace in the Midlands, two solitary clerical workers sit down at their desks to begin a routine night shift. But as the evening creeps into the night, a confidential file is accidentally opened and a quietly horrifying secret is unleashed. A secret that’ll soon turn their lives of rotas, packed lunches and fag breaks violently upside down and the workers, against each other.

A fantasy thriller with a pounding 1980s soundtrack, Stoke-on-Trent’s Potboiler Theatre invite you to a world of ruthless ambition, desperate escapism and deeply held desires: a world of Devotion.

in front of the altar

Slow mo in one frame - a little yellow, bobbing on the steps, till it disappeared into the distance, into the crowd....

Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus of Tamil descent. Every year over a million devotees flock to the temple in Batu Caves just outside of Kuala Lumpur.

Instead of the kavadi, other devotees carry a pot of milk (called a palkuddam) as an offering. Women especially but not exclusively.

All will carry them up the 272 steps described in earlier posts.

(I like this one a lot. The balustrade ornaments lined up in his direction, the negative space, he in isolation from the crowd, the bokeh adding a halo effect.

And if you look carefully, a spot of hair on his shirt - his head was shaved earlier for this devotion - delicious detail to me!)

Photo of Hiroki Tamiya in Niigata, May 2007. Hiroki is one of the most devoted and selfless practitioners I have ever worked with. His contribution to the spread of this great practice cannot be measured.

Shaven heads and orange robes actually pre-date Buddhism by many centuries. In Vedic culture a person dressed according to his or her social and spiritual position. Simple robes, although external, have traditionally been worn to help cultivate humility and freedom from vanity.

Film Year: 2022

Locations: USA

Film Length: 138

Languages: English, Korean

Director: JD Dillard

Featuring: Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, Christina Jackson, Thomas Sadoski, Joe Jonas

Set in the Korean War, Devotion captures the tale of the U.S. Navy’s first Black aviator, Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), and his dedicated wingman Tom Hudner. Despite Jesse’s status as a decorated first-rate pilot, he cannot dispel the prejudice and racist hostility that runs rampant in a recently desegregated military.

When Tom joins the unit, Jesse is initially wary of his overly amicable nature. Yet, their intense dedication to their squadron allows them to forge an incredible bond of trust as they are sent into combat for the first time. Featuring a stunning backdrop of beautifully shot aerial sequences, this captivating narrative recounts a story of perseverance and courage, as two remarkable individuals make history while joining the ranks of the U.S. Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.
