Mayke wanted to give a nice picture of her and her friend on Mother's Day and together they visited my studio for a nice shoot where we made some pretty interesting portraits.

The main light in this picture was a Deep Octa softbox from above camera and a smaller Portalite softbox from beneath. A third strobe through a reflector with grid created the light circle on the black seamless background. Stefan was holding a green screen picture, and I edited this to have Mayke appear instead.

I met Lee back in 2007 through his yoga class at the Pro Club. His energy and colourful personality really comes through in person, and in these photographs. Lee brought creative energy to our shoot that I wouldn't have had on my own, and I love how they turned out. Looking forward to shooting together again!

Day 93 of 365

"Skinned Alive"

Today's portrait came to me after I peeled a mandarin for my daughter. I removed the peel in one piece, and immediately pondered how it would look if I had cut the outer membrane first. Well, it looks a bit like a ribbon. With that in mind, I peeled another one, strung it up over my black tile, and prepared to shoot. Our light is a deep Octa at camera-left, and it is positioned with just the front edge of the light along the side of our little friend. This gives us enough light to illuminate the fruit, but also allows for some fall-off on the camera-right side. I sprayed the orange with a spritz bottle, and waited for the drip. I removed the support string in post, and that's how it all happened. Thanks for dripping by!! I don't have any orange jokes.....none.

Photo shoot with Elfic the Jester (http://www.elfic.org.uk) on 5th April 2011.

Rupert Elford, (a.k.a. Elfic the Jester and Professor Elfic), graduated in 1988 from Bristol University with a BSc in Chemistry and an ability to juggle. However his passion for circus skills and performance gravitated him towards a career in entertainment. After countless hours of obsessive practice and a stint at Cicus School, Rupert mastered the arts of toppling off tightropes, wobbling on unicycles and juggling dangerous objects.

His alter ego, Elfic the Jester was born in 1992 and has since entertained young and old in every imaginable venue in the South West. In 1995 he inadvertently won 'Jester of the Year' in Covent Garden and more recently has performed as one half of 'The Desmond Tutus Unicycle Ballet Troupe'. He has been teaching circus skills in schools, youth clubs and community centres for many years now, which has proved successful and popular. In Prof Elfics' Science Circus Rupert at last has the chance to combine his scientific knowledge with his circus experience.

Yesterday, I was commissioned to produce images of a friends dog.

Meet Bruno, a Cane Corso (ancient italian molosser).

He was such a good boy on the set, always patient and showing off his various faces one by one.

First time for me to shoot animals with strobes on location but despite my fears of what could all go wrong, we all had a great time on that semi-overcast day.

Big thanks to my man Vince, who did a great job with the quadra slung around his shoulders, constantly ratio- tracking Bruno with the deep octa on.

Elinchrom Quadra (A socket) fitted with a 1m deep octa, front baffle removed, 45°, 3m away cam left.
