Shoot with Kosmo Kings on 24th Nov 2010. Kosmo Kings are a great bunch of lads, comprising of ex-members of Kolo and Chasing faces.
They're a local Devon band playing catchy pop rock - keep an eye on them, they've got the right ingredients to go far!

A Girl And Some Tunes: The Girl With The Nowhere Lake
PJ Harvey - Water
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myqnw4YU6KI
She has decided to escape from the city, and found a place lost in the nature. A place called the "Nowhere Lake".
Now she's there, she feels the wind and the freedom, it's like she can fly. This place is really unique.
The sun is rising high, everything seems to be perfect here. She hears no urban sound, only small noises from the nature. She decides to stand on a bridge that leads to a small island on the lake.
She feels a bit tired, so she decides to rest on the bridge.
She needs no one here, she feels so free, like she could never be in the city.
She stands up and feels the breeze. She raises her arms and she takes a look away. No she will never get back there.
She sits near the water, everything she could ever want or need is here. Let's throw away the urban life and its fakes dreams!
This is the end of this episode in the "A Girl And Some Tunes" series. It was specially made for the summer.
Now you just have to wait for another story!

We got lost trying to place some park outside Providence Mall for some Fall colors. We took some detour and passed this park with covered bridge (don't remember the name of it). Saw this lake with some nice color and thought it would be a nice place for a portrait with the wife.

A Girl And Some Tunes: The Girl Who Runs The 21
Robert Johnson - Crossroad Blues
www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtDlZdhHRCI
The "21" is one of America’s most famous speakeasies from the Prohibition Era. It officially opened on January 1, 1930. Everyone believed that it was a man who runs at the time. But a girl ruled the place. Now let's follow her story...
This is a special episode, made for the 7th birthday of the "A Girl And Some Tunes" series. The story takes place during the prohibition era. Enjoy it!

More product lighting practice shooting a Tag Heuer Carrera. This is shot more in an advertising style with an angle almost directly head-on, and placed against a white background.
Strobist Info: 27.5" Elinchrom Deep Octa directly above watch. White reflectors on either side and underneath watch for fill. Some compositing needed to eliminate unwanted reflections.
Details: I've had this watch for many years (which I love), but never had the skills to photograph it like this until now. I'm pleased with the results, although the inevitable scuffs on the band were very hard to remove in post.
A few lessons learned: it is WAY easier to shoot this with just one light and reflector cards than multiple lights. I could never get a multi-light setup to work the way I wanted, because it always ended up having hot spots and unwanted reflections. Strategically placed white cards were way easier to work with. Shooting head-on is REALLY difficult, because the camera equipment reflects in the crystal. Adjusting angles ever so subtly was needed to get this right. This is shot slightly from above, which trades off some detail at the 6 o'clock position. Another regret: I really should have spent way more time cleaning before shooting, as this left a lot of work in post to correct. Finally, the pen tool is invaluable for cut-outs for this kind of shot. Getting this to be on a clean white background in-camera a bit tricky given the small working area, so doing this in PS was way easier.

I also shot a few frames on film with the "Bling Bling Background" as well. I still like working with my medium format camera for portraits from time to time but on a regular basis I prefer the compactness of my Leica gear.

I am still comparing various negative films for different applications. This time I was using Ektar 100 as a "non-portrait-film" for portraits. If you're interested take a look at a similar shot with a more modest Portra 160 or the digital complement.

I met Lee back in 2007 through his yoga class at the Pro Club. His energy and colourful personality really comes through in person, and in these photographs. Lee brought creative energy to our shoot that I wouldn't have had on my own, and I love how they turned out. Looking forward to shooting together again!

I was on tour in Belgium with my band last weekend and took the opportunity to do a few photos for our good friends The Rhumba Kings at the Ace Cafe before our show on Sunday.
It is a very small place with low ceilings and proved quite a challenging space to work in with my lights, but I’m pleased with how this one turned out! This was one of the first ‘test’ shots I snapped as I was getting the lighting right and happily it turned out to be one of the picks of the bunch.
The two rim lights were just out of shot to the rear on both sides, crammed in against the corner walls of the venue - they couldn't be any further away.
The main was out in front in a deep octabox, as high as I could get it against the low ceiling!

Inspired heavily by Mélanie Joly's campaign posters in last years' Montreal mayoral race, Jeff and I sought to create a similarly stark and engaging image. No beauty shot, not a typical campaign or social media image, something that could grab your attention and hold it.
