Photo shoot with Elfic the Jester (http://www.elfic.org.uk) on 5th April 2011.
Rupert Elford, (a.k.a. Elfic the Jester and Professor Elfic), graduated in 1988 from Bristol University with a BSc in Chemistry and an ability to juggle. However his passion for circus skills and performance gravitated him towards a career in entertainment. After countless hours of obsessive practice and a stint at Cicus School, Rupert mastered the arts of toppling off tightropes, wobbling on unicycles and juggling dangerous objects.
His alter ego, Elfic the Jester was born in 1992 and has since entertained young and old in every imaginable venue in the South West. In 1995 he inadvertently won 'Jester of the Year' in Covent Garden and more recently has performed as one half of 'The Desmond Tutus Unicycle Ballet Troupe'. He has been teaching circus skills in schools, youth clubs and community centres for many years now, which has proved successful and popular. In Prof Elfics' Science Circus Rupert at last has the chance to combine his scientific knowledge with his circus experience.
I met Lee back in 2007 through his yoga class at the Pro Club. His energy and colourful personality really comes through in person, and in these photographs. Lee brought creative energy to our shoot that I wouldn't have had on my own, and I love how they turned out. Looking forward to shooting together again!

A Girl And Some Tunes: The Girl Who Runs The 21
Stormy Weather - Ethel Waters
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zywZUhaUqMo
The "21" is one of America’s most famous speakeasies from the Prohibition Era. It officially opened on January 1, 1930. Everyone believed that it was a man who runs at the time. But a girl ruled the place. Now let's follow her story...
Running a joint like this was not an easy job during those times. But she was a firm-handed woman.
She has to know every dirty little secret of every politician, cop, or journalist in the town. Now she's waiting for a very important call from one of these men.
The phone rings as she drinks a shot of whiskey. The man on the phone tells her someone wants to murder her...
This is a special episode, made for the 7th birthday of the "A Girl And Some Tunes" series. The story takes place during the prohibition era. Enjoy it!

again the incredible Villa project, and on this day we did it. We brought a real horse inside the house. It was more than a extraordinary experience.
For all those who don't believe it, horses eyes are too slow to recon the flashes.

Shoot with singer/songwriter Jon Burnell.
Lighting was a pair of Elinchrom BX500Ri in 66cm softboxes to the left and right, plus a 250Ri with deep octa overhead and a BX500Ri in striplight below for fill.
Camera was Nikon D700.

Jolanda was 16 weeks advanced in pregnancy when she found my photography website, and arranged a maternity shoot for the 34th week. It was my first shoot of a pregnant woman and her friend, but we were all very satisfied with the results.
I lit the seamless white background paper with two Ranger Quadra heads, and used two Style RX 300 heads with a Deep Octa and Strip Box to light the model. Her friend was holding the cloth she was wrapped in so she could lean forward.

Portrait session from yesterday evening when he and some other dudes passed by.
His buddy gave him a fresh haircut.
We talked and shot into the morning, which is when I took this portrait of him.
Without his hair.
Elinchrom Ranger S
B-socket as main into elinchrom deep octa without front baffle, 11 o'clock and 50 cm away from subject @ f/6.3
A-socket as background light into standard reflector + 30° grid, lying on the floor, directly behind subject aimed up and cam-right. The background's roughly 2m away from him. I metered this light behind his head to be sure I'm not getting too much bounce @ onepointsomething - and therefore negligible,
Since I used a further gridded 80x60cm softbox as rim-light, 2 o'clock and 1.5m away from him, which metered at f/4.5 (something like 1/16th on an SB-26) and separated him more effectively from the background.

Testing the Elinchrom Skyport HS in combination with an old Quadra 400 w/s pack with a slow S-head. Quadra at 4.0 power, Rotalux deep octa with outer baffle camera left. Bright sun rear. Nikon D800E / 85mm 1.4G. ISO100 f2.5 @ 1/3200s. Apparently HS works just fine without the new HS head.
