700 sq. ft. multi-level deck with roof structure. We installed sunlights and fans in the roof structure over the kitchen area. The kitchen area is faced with cultured stone. The seating area is flush with the top of the built in planter boxes giving a feeling of being on the ground while still being a few steps over ground level to keep an eye on guests in the pool.

and as you go around the corner, the lush woods come into view. my husband jokes that the sumac are our northeastern version of palm trees. (please note... we still have to treat the wood of the deck/porch and paint the whole exterior of the house. cooler weather will be our friend.)

Sanding the deck in 97°F heat, so much fun. Hoping to get a coat of new paint in the floor boards and top rail before summer rains start.

deck, before stain

Ever since we finished the deck, I've been saying, "I'm going to make gate so the dogs can hang out on the deck." Several months later, I finally found the time to get it done.

As you can see, it's successfully keeping Sophie on the deck.

This railing is a unique mix of Deckorators square balusters in Bronze, Phoenix rails, and a matching Fiberon cap rail.

The updating of a 25 year old deck, inspired by other wonderful designs in flickr, some original ideas, my own vision: a mix of modern, country, beauty, elegance, and above all, some of our travel observations.

We hope to be the source of inspiration to others, seeking ideas for deck design and construction - that would be the ultimate compliment.

A photography footnote: pictures taken by using a small tripod and attaching it with duct tape to a 10 ft pole - 10 sec. timer. All HDR.

Our stopping point last week when we ran out of stain

The previous owners of this home had begun to adorn their yard with a pond. The exterior had a lot of potential, but lacked continuity with the existing house, porch and pond. We needed to create a design that would blend all of these elements together in a functional and attractive way. We constructed the deck using an element resistant composite material and accented it with white vinyl railings. By removing the half-wall on the existing porch, the homeowners could now view the beautifully landscaped pond from the deck, as well as the inside of their cozy haven. Our finished product was functional, low maintenance and esthetically pleasing to the eye.

We still need to make a divider between us and the neighbours for along the top of the deck.
