North Coogee Dog Beach
Perth, Western Australia
After being spoiled by all the grandeur of the Swiss alps, I forgot how satisfying it can be to discover new and less touristy subjects to photograph. A classic examples was this decaying shipwreck of SS Wyola steam tug boat partially buried underground in North Coogee beach. I happened to chance upon it while googling about beaches to bring my dog for a walk. After viewing a few images online, I thought it had the potential to be an interesting foreground element of a photograph.
An hour later, I was setting up on the beach, struggling to find a potential compositions for sunset. Having unlimited access to the subject and without the presence of other people, provided me the freedom to work on different perspectives . Combined with the dynamic light as the sun started to dip below the horizon, as well as the interactions between the waves and the subject allowed for an overwhelming number of creative options. After fumbling about for some time and observing the lighting conditions, I decided on this slightly elevated perspective, with on side of the hull serving as a leading line to the interesting fin-shaped bow of the boat and the vibrant skies in the background. Deliberately framing the subject just below the horizon also allowed me to utilise a hard neutral density filter to hold back the bright portion of the sky and capturing the large dynamic range in a single image. I also timed the waves to create some sense of movement in the water.

I've been passing by this decaying house almost every single day of my life but only a few months ago I really noticed it.
I waited for the right weather conditions (wind and clouds) to take this long exposure of 504 seconds.
No need to say it, of course: it started to rain and I had a massive shower in the process of taking this picture! :D

The Valley is full of old decaying farm buildings and sheds... this one is close enough to the road for me to snap some pics :)
I am almost done with my favorite abandoned house! Please bear with me for another couple of shots! ;-)
