This wooden photo frame was made from an old door which now uses its 'decayed' looks to add texture to our favorite wedding picture and gracefully store our memories.
I'm terribly behind on processing images made during my Autumn field work. So much has happened since then. It seems like a lifetime ago. By now, this little scene in Yosemite's high country is likely covered with snow and ice. Even on the Fall day when this image was made, there was ice around the edges of the lake. These water lilies were in a state of semi-dormancy, getting ready for a long Winter ahead. They were certainly not in pristine condition, but I found them beautifully interesting nonetheless.

Some years ago, the ring road around Stockholm was extended towards the east. This area with offices and warehouses is now disused since it is to close to the new motorway. I go there once in a while to document the decay.
Everywhere I turned on Alcatraz there was decay, even as the iron bars remained strong for now. It made for a powerful setting for Ai Weiwei's art work.
But it also made me think of an addendum to Isaiah 2:4 "And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they study war anymore."
Once we stop making war, we must find a way to stop populating prisons. In our imperfect world today, some wars are unavoidable and some people must be kept away from society. But neither war nor prison is right. And Alcatraz has been both.
Maybe the solution is to make them all into museums and art installations.
