At 5:08pm on Monday, 25 July, we received reports of a fire on Theale Road in Burghfield.
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road, Newbury, Hungerford, Mortimer, Ascot, Whitley Wood, Wokingham and Theale were sent to the scene alongside three Officers. Three 4x4s, a water carrier and an incident command unit were also sent to the scene. Crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in an industrial barn. Using six jets, four high pressure hose reels and a high volume pump, firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, whilst protecting surrounding barns and fields.
Crews were on the scene for approximately 16 hours and 15 minutes.
Date and Time of capture: 4/8/2024 from about 2 to about 5 pm EDT.
Location: Washington D.C.
Gear: Seestar S50 "smart telescope" equipped with a Seestar-supplied solar filter. Cavix LP-64 camera leveler interposed between the Seestar and a tripod.

The original still images were edited in Adobe Lightroom Classic (LR) as follows:
Applied the same 1:1 aspect ratio crop to the selected images.
After masking the background, I pushed the Blacks slider in LR's Basic Panel all the way to the left (i.e. -100) to get the same black background for each image.
Finally, using LR's Print module I created a chronological arrangement of the above edited images.

Remark: This photograph was taken at the present day T-intersection of Calumet Road and Broadway Avenue, facing the east side of Calumet Avenue. The building to the left in the photograph was the Chesterton Town Hall and fire station. Both buildings shown in the photograph still stand [2014]. Anton G. Gustafson owned a one-half interest in the Chesterton-Porter Ice Company. Gustafson was born in Westchester Township, Porter County, Indiana, on February 19, 1861, the son of Adolph and Clara (Swanson) Gustafson, natives of Sweden. Anton married Rose Thomas on December 31, 1894, and they had four children: Raymond Thomas, Mildred G., Mary C., and Lois. Anton served as recorder of Porter County, a trustee of Westchester Township, and postmaster of Chesterton.
The sign in the window above the horse's neck states: "MILES ORTON'S 25 CENT SHOWS." The round sign behind the delivery wagon states: "PABST MILWAUKEE, POOL & BILLIARDS." Miles Orton was a circus performer and one of the foremost bareback horse trick riders of his day.
The storefront sign of SARATOGA, J. A. KREIGER was a saloon and billiard hall and saloon. J. A. KREIGER refers to John A. Krieger (notice difference in spelling of surname), owner of the structure. Krieger would later rename his establishment The Klondike Saloon.
Interestingly, John A. Krieger was president of the Chesterton Cemetery Association, while Anton G. Gustafson served as that association's secretary in the early 1900s.

The following news item appeared in the November 7, 1902, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:
Chesterton Chips.
The "Saratoga" is the name of the swellest drinking resort in Chesterton. It is J. A. Krieger's new place on Valparaiso street. The building is heated by hot water, has its own water works run by gasoline engine, and a splendid system of lighting. The upper floor, 28x70, is to be used as a ball room, and has one of the finest hardwood floors in this part of the state. In one corner is a toilet room, equipped with all the modern conveniences of city buildings. The furniture of the bar room is birchwood with mahogany finish, and the billiard room is equipped with two pool and one billiard tables. The proprietor has spared neither pains nor expense to make the "Saratoga" the finest pleasure resort in this part of the county, and in fact Valparaiso has no place that can compare with it.

LOCAL NEWS OF THE WEEK
Gustafson & Kreiger, the ice-dealers, are setting a very bad example to the ice-trust of the country. They announce that they will furnish ice as long as their ice-houses hold out to their customers for the same rate paid last year. There will be no raise of rates here until the local supply is exhausted, and then if the supply does not hold out, which may not be likely, the users will pay for what they get at actual cost rate, plus cost of delivering.

Remarks/comments: A rather plain casting from a brand I hadn't known of prior of purchase from a thrift store that I often grab mixed bags of diecast cars for $3.99 each. Originally thought it was a Ford Crown Victoria.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I've always had a fancy for slim box, basic Barbies. Maybe that's in part because I never had the patience to save up for a more "deluxe" doll, and so I had many budget dolls as a kid. But I also find that the basic/slim box type Barbies are equally as wonderful quality as their fancier counterparts, just with a few less fixings. I recall seeing Riviera Barbies all the time on eBay, back in 2011/2012, when I first started trying to identify my childhood dolls and their clothes. Therefore, I realized I already had this doll's outfit, prior to purchasing her! This lady was one of the many from the infamous "60 Doll Bin" of 2013. Yes, as the name suggests, this lot hosted nearly 60 dolls! I can't recall if I identified this girl easily, or if she took some time to id. But her straight arms paired with this modern late 90s face, is an interesting, unique combination. Most later 90s dolls have "Shani" arms, not the straight, lifeless ones this gal sports. This was an indicator straight away that this doll was probably a budget one. I do remember how excited I was when I finally confirmed she was a Riviera Barbie, and that I already had her outfit waiting. Most of the dolls from the "60 Doll Bin" were nude or scantily clad. We did not have many of their factory ensembles already at home either, which makes this girl stand out in my memory. Despite her humble origins and craftsmanship, this doll is stunning. She reminds me a bit of my beloved childhood Rio de Janeiro Barbie, aka Autumn!
