Members of the Disaster Assessment and Recovery Team (DART) repair a section of roof atop the Operations Support Building II at NASAâs Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The effort is part of the spaceportâs ongoing recovery from Hurricane Matthew, which passed to the east of Kennedy on Oct. 6 and 7, 2016. The center received some isolated roof damage, damaged support buildings, a few downed power lines, and limited water intrusion. Beach erosion also occurred, although the storm surge was less than expected. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett

The Bedford Dart was an initiative set up by Bedfordshire County Council around about 2005 which sought to give a corporate branding to some of the Council subsidised bus services running in the area. Along with the North Beds Dart operating services out towards Renhold, Little Staughton, Keysoe, Kimbolton etc and East Beds Dart operating runs out from Biggleswade to Potton, Sandy etc the Bedford Dart offered journies to various parts of the town unserved by regular town services. Part of the car park at Aspects Leisure was devoted to a Park and Ride style operation of which a sign as seen here remains at the side of the little used Aspects Car Park alongside Barkers Lane. The Bedford Dart series of routes was ultimately unsuccessful and nearly all remains of the services were removed quickly after the routes ended in 2008. This sign is a rare reminder of this part of bus service history in the Bedford area.

The 21 almost always operates on Darts (similarly to when it ran on Alexander Royales until its transfer to single deckers in January 2009). On Mondays to Fridays 11 vehicles are required to operate this route which is a 15 minute service, though with an extension at either ends of the diagram. The outer sections therefore are usually 30 minute services.
The 21 is based at Marine depot and the Dart fleet currently (as of early 2010) comprises 21 Pointers, fleet numbers 64 - 85 (except 69). All of the Central and Marine Darts came into service from the second half of 2002 (52 reg-plate) with the 15 Longstone Darts (86 - 100) entering service from the
second half of 2003 (53 reg-plate).
My friend and fellow enthusiast Peter Barclay, from Sunderland came to visit in January 2010 and we travelled from Clermiston to Leith Links on this Dart, no. 83.
At the terminus here two passengers had travelled on the wrong 21 and wanted to go to the Royal Infirmary which is on the longer diagram. The driver was really helpful and guided them to where they needed to go next.
Standing outside the bus by now he then asked Peter and I if he could help us. I just said we were bus enthusiasts and he said "oh that's interesting I was looking at some pictures on the internet and eh..do you know a chap called
Stuart Montgomery"? Peter was astonished and I don't know who looked the more taken aback the driver or me! What a small world it is.
Well Tony if you're reading this then thanks for all your help it's been great. You're a real pal and I do hope we'll see your photographs and stories soon.
STOP PRESS: As of February 2010 Dart 64 has been transferred to Central garage.

Darter (Anhinga melanogaster)
The Darter is a large, slim water bird with a long snake-like neck, sharp
pointed bill, and long, rounded tail. Male birds are dark brownish black
with glossy black upperwings, streaked and spotted white, silver-grey and
brown. The strongly kinked neck has a white or pale brown stripe from the
bill to where the neck kinks and the breast is chestnut brown. Females and
immatures are grey-brown above, pale grey to white below, with a white neck
stripe that is less distinct in young birds. The Darter is often seen
swimming with only the snake-like neck visible above the water, or drying
its wings while perched on a tree or stump over water. While its gait is
clumsy on land, it can soar gracefully to great heights on thermals, gliding
from updraft to updraft. It has a cross-shaped silhouette when flying.
In Australia, the Darter is found from Adelaide, South Australia, to Tennant
Creek, Northern Territory and then to Broome, Western Australia. it is also
found in south-western Australia, from Perth to Esperance. Worldwide, it has
been thought of as one of two main Anhinga species (the other, A. anhinga,
is found in North America), found in the southern half of Africa,
Madagascar, Iraq, Pakistan, India, south-east Asia, Indonesia and New
Guinea. However, A. melanogaster is now considered to be further divided
into three species, with rufa being found in Africa, melanogaster in south
Asia and novaehollandiae in New Guinea and Australia (the Australasian
Darter).

Dart 65 looking like she's lying in a box of soft cotton wool!
Lovely to capture this scene with the snow so thick and fresh, no traffic around and just see this destination screen with it's roller blinds.
For me Lothian's destination screens are the saving grace these days and it's nice not to have neon electronic screens. There can't be too many companies left to have screens like these.
The other thing I so like about the single decker Darts is the vertical drop from top to bottom - in a world where buses are becoming more and more sloping at the front this is a refreshing joy to see.
While I stood in the snow here, virtually alone, the silence all around me was deafening as the distinctive engine of this lonely looking Dart purred towards me.

The Company invested $700 million in a state-of-the-art body shop and added nearly 500 jobs for production of the Dart. A surprise early morning find
Southern Vectis 3329 (HW54 DCE), ex-Wightbus 5862, unloads at Newport having come in on a 1.
I took some shots of it as I didn't think I had any of this ex-Wightbus MPD, but it turns out I did and I was thinking of the other one!
Note the comparison in OmniCity rears to the right, with 1142 (HW09 BBU) in old style and 1104 (HW08 AOT) on the far right wearing the new application.

Christmas Eve 2009 and here's one of 50 Dennis Darts brought into service from 2002. Number 57 creeps through the slippery cobbled streets of the New Town at Eyre Place. Darts 54 to 63 (along with an earlier Dart number 188) can easily be found on service 36. Three more Darts, numbers 51, 52 and 53 are no longer in public service and are used as training vehicles in yellow livery (TB51 - 53).
Very often residents of the Georgian New Town are treated to Volvo buses as well, but the area between Broughton and the Dean Bridge often proves to be a testing experience for even the most experienced driver, such are the narrow streets often heavily congested with traffic and pedestrians. In conditions like these it's a even more tricky.
