1935 Daimler COG5 lorry
Preserved, ex Birmingham City Transport
Wythall Transport Museum, 26 May 2025
Originally bus 638 with a double-deck body by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Works. That body was scrapped in 1947 and it was converted into a dropside lorry used for towing broken-down buses, moving shelters and other heavy equipment, and spreading grit in the winter. In this form it survived into the WMPTE era, working until 1973 and then being sold for preservation.
Here's one of 325 which features slightly better lighting, hence rather less a grainy image than the last one.
Here the service was being used as a (quite effective) magnet to attract people to pass out fliers and info on the weekend free shuttle service which was operated throughout the City Centre in December 2011 to help people get around while doing their Christmas Shopping. I do have to confess that while I was one of the passengers, I was there purely to enjoy the journey on such a unique vehicle.
I did my best to be patient and try to get a people-free shot from here, but it was lunchtime and it was in the run-up to Christmas, and St. Nicholas Street is busy enough even on a quiet day, so that just wasn't going to happen!

Daimler CVG6, OHS979, new to McGill's Bus Service Ltd, Barrhead in 1960, seen in St. James Street, Paisley, in an undated photograph, believed to be taken before 1967 as there appears to be no overhead electrification equipment visible on the railway line to Gourock and Wemyss Bay in the background. From a collection purchased on e-bay. Photographer not known.
I was fortunate in my youth to receive some help and encouragement from sympathetic people who worked for Daimler. Their help and patience enabled me to build up my own records long before the days of `BLOT`.
I have also been able to accumulate a collection of official photos of new Daimlers, seems a shame to keep them hidden away when so many other people are interested in seeing them.
As none of them are marked `copyright`, I have scanned them, but marked them to prevent any unofficial copying for publication
Two 1935 Daimlers outside Bute House, Charlotte Square Edinburgh.. Bute House is the official residence of the First minister of Scotland.. 125 years ago, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz invented the world’s first automobiles in Germany. Since that momentous occasion, the Daimler Group has evolved into the world’s leader in automobile technology, establishing iconic brands and setting the benchmark for excellence in the industry. Daimler has been associated with India from the 1950s, when it introduced India’s first indigenously manufactured truck. In 2008, the group reinforced its commitment with the establishment of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (DICV). This new enterprise enters India with the mission of designing and manufacturing products that suit the unique demands of Indian terrain and customers.Daimler’s new ‘BharatBenz’ brand of commercial vehicles have been designed and will be manufactured specially for India. It is powered by the synergy between global leadership in technology and local, deep-rooted customer knowledge.
